Coalition for Nursing Careers in California

Both initiatives focus as follows:

Time Frame/Target population:
Ongoing/Targets middle, high school and community college and university students and students from ethnic/racial minorities, particularly Hispanic and African American.

Partners/Funders:

  • Middle school high school, college and university, and community college counselors.
  • Nurses and student nurses. CSPCN members, CA. Office of Statewide Health Planning, professional associations, unions, educators, health care systems.
  • Funders: Industry grants, NURSEWEEK

Messages:

  • The shortage is a public health crisis
  • Diversity in Nursing: Men and women, representatives of all racial/ ethnic groups to match the population of California, and diversity of opportunities within the profession of nursing.

Evaluation of effectiveness:
Increased numbers of enrollments and graduations from schools of nursing.
Diversification of the workforce to be representative of the California population.

Lessons learned:

  • All initiatives take a long time due to the complexity and large size of California.
  • Telecommunications help to overcome the problems of size and distance.
  • Financial support is always problematic.
  • Recruitment initiatives are easier to implement through regional collaboratives.

Resources available:

  • Currently, the Healthcare Association of Southern California has a trailer videotape that accompanies the National Nursing Students' Association videotape.
  • A videotape on opportunities in nursing in California, financial aid support and recruitment for a diverse workforce is being produced, It should be ready for distribution within the next few months. We are seeking funding to distribute the tape and convert the tape into a CD for distribution to career counselors.
