The Need for Doctorally Prepared Nurses: The National
Academy of Sciences Report
The recent report from the National Academy of Sciences
calls for nursing to increase the number of doctorally
prepared nurses in a number of ways: by doubling the number
of nurse scientists; developing a non-research clinical
doctorate to prepare expert practitioners who can also
serve as clinical faculty; and increasing the number of
productive research years for nurses prepared in PhD,
DNSc and similar doctoral programs. Learn more about these
recommendations and their implications from two nurse
leaders active in preparation of the report.
Speaker: Ada Sue Hinshaw, PhD, Dean, School of Nursing,

- Online Doctoral Programs: Issues, Successes,
and Challenges
Consider the evolution of this approach and what we have
learned from experience. How do we create a "scholarly

require ongoing attention? How do we prepare online doctoral
graduates to be faculty? Participants are encouraged to
share examples and successful strategies.
Speaker: Connie Delaney, PhD, Dean, School of Nursing,
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN
- Institutional Partnership: A DNP Model
A number of schools are implementing or planning Doctor
of Nursing Practice programs.
This session describes one collaborative program including
a Master's program not authorized to confer doctoral degrees.
Learn about curriculum, faculty, and resource/business issues;
recruiting and retention of students; evaluation outcomes;
and recommendations. Participants are encouraged to share
their own observations and successful implementation approaches.
Speakers: Lois Halstead, PhD, Acting Dean, College of
Nursing, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL and

Special Program Session for Directors of Doctoral Programs
T32 Funding for Doctoral Programs
Take advantage of this informal opportunity to hear advice
from two colleagues experienced with T32 grants. What do they
recommend regarding how to plan and write the proposal, develop

a T32? What helpful information would have been valuable earlier?
Enjoy an informal discussion and share approaches. The session
is designed for directors of doctoral programs, but all interested
are welcome.

Faculty Career Development: Our Own and Others
What is involved with faculty career development, and why
bother? Join an experienced academic leader whose recent focus
has been helping faculty identify their own career goals,
strategies to be completely successful in reaching them, and
considerations for assisting colleagues with the same type
of personal reflection. Think about the differing perspectives
of the faculty member, the dean/department chair, the university,
and students. Identify career stages, and the hallmarks and
faculty development needs of each. Join colleagues in conversation
about best practices across the county.
Speaker: Angela Barron McBride, PhD, University Dean Emerita
and Distinguished Professor, Department of Environments for
Health, School of Nursing, Indiana University-Purdue University,
Indianapolis, IN
