The Changing Academic Environment
Most academic leaders agree that today's higher education
environment bears little resemblance to when they were
students. Student characteristics are different, educational
issues have evolved, and expectations of faculty have
changed. What are the current issues in nursing higher
education? How do we ensure that nursing higher education
remains relevant and responsive to the academic institution
and the communities we serve? Join an experienced dean
to reflect on these questions.
Speaker: Dolores Sands, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean, School
of Nursing, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX

Linear and Non-Linear Decision Making
Consider various decision-making methods that can be used
in the context of administrative and organizational decision
making in higher education. Examine the characteristics
of and differences between linear and non-linear decision
making, and the types of circumstances in which leaders
might use each. In discussion with colleagues, explore
the dynamics and characteristics of actual academic decisions.
Speaker: Michael Bleich, PhD, RN, CNAA, BC, Associate
Dean and Professor, Clinical and Community Affairs, School
of Nursing, University of Kansas and Executive Director/Chief
Operating Officer, KU HealthPartners, Inc., Kansas City,
KS

Facilitating Adaptive Environments and Nimble Thinking
Academic environments sometimes seem to be changing faster
than the faculty working in them. How can we create an
academic culture in which thinking moves from reactive
and customary to responsive, flexible, and innovative?
Join colleagues in this interactive session to develop
strategies to better use resources, overcome impediments
to change, and "co-create" an academic culture
that meets the future needs of the profession.
Facilitators: Executive Development Series Subcommittee.

Break

Program Session
Leading by Example: The Art of Mentoring
Explore mentoring as a valuable approach to leadership
and faculty development with a respected academic leader
and author. Although we often read about mentoring and
hear it referred to as a useful strategy, many nurse educators
have not had the benefit of being mentored or the privilege
of mentoring others. As the faculty shortage deepens and
we increasingly need to develop both faculty and academic
leaders, consider approaches that work, and share successful
strategies with colleagues.
Speaker: Roberta Olson, PhD, RN, Dean, College of Nursing,
South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD and co-editor
of The Mentor Connection in Nursing.

$trategizing for Fi$cal Succe$$
Our academic institutions are funded in a variety of ways
and often receive and manage resources very differently.
Academic financial planning can range from daily operational
decision making that keeps the nursing academic unit solvent,
to taking advantage of unexpected and unbudgeted opportunities,
to complex strategic planning that considers nursing in
the context of the larger institution for years to come.
Often considered a staid process, how can the budget and
budgeting instead be flexible and responsive? Learn practical
strategies from academic leaders who are experienced in
resource management from a variety of perspectives.
Speakers: Maureen Keefe, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean, College
of Nursing, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT and
Phyllis Horns, DSN, RN, FAAN, Dean, School of Nursing,
East Carolina University, Greenville, NC.
