Meeting Highlights
Join colleagues at the Fall Semiannual Meeting, October 31-November 3, 2009 at the J.W. Marriott, Washington, DC in celebration of AACN's 40th anniversary. The program format remains the same, but we will enjoy a few nontraditional sessions during the meeting. Help AACN celebrate the past and continue to shape the future of nursing higher education.

Multiple Associate/Assistant Deans Invited
In a departure from previous policy, each Dean/Director is invited to bring more than one associate/assistant dean to the Fall Meeting as a way to familiarize these senior academic leaders with content and issues they will find useful as they assist their deans and improve education in their settings.  A reduced rate is offered for these representatives.  All meeting sessions are open to associates/assistants, who are particularly encouraged to attend the orientation session on Saturday late afternoon and to register for the Saturday morning meeting and program of the Organizational Leadership Network (OLN). Deans must be registered in order for their associate/assistant deans to attend.

  • Strategic Planning: Systematic Approaches for Shaping the Future
As most academic leaders realize, ‘business as usual’ is no longer usual in nursing education. Strategic planning is an essential leadership skill to move the organization forward in times of increasing uncertainty and complexity.  Join an experienced dean to identify the characteristics and steps of strategic planning, recognize key stakeholders, and plan around organizational strengths, weaknesses, and challenges.
Speaker: Peggy Hewlett, PhD, Dean and Professor, College of Nursing, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC
  • Building a Budget
Academic leaders increasingly are called upon to justify their educational operations in terms of the bottom line – often a daunting skill to the uninitiated, but a skill that can be learned and mastered.  How do you translate strategic goals into financial terms? How do you capitalize upon relationships built within the university and in the community? Join a dean who is skilled at and enjoys working with budgets to gain practical insights.
Speaker: Gloria F. Donnelly, PhD, Dean and Professor, College of Nursing and Health Professions, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA
  • Same Language, Different Voices: Effective Communication Across and Within Gender Cultures
Nurse educators are aware that conversations can be interpreted differently between men andwomen. Gender often is an invisible cultural context that can impact communication in the workplace.  Strong leaders understand how to use different communication strategies in different situations.  Learn how you can use specific communication strategies typical of each gender culture to lead more effectively.
Speaker: Heidi Taylor, PhD, Associate Vice President for Learning Assessment, West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX
  • Preparing the Pitch: Using Case Statements
Asking for resources is an art form, and most academic leaders appreciate the opportunity to perfect these skills.  Who should we approach and how should the message change for different groups? What information is most persuasive and pivotal to share? How do we articulate our school’s needs as well as convey its contributions to the institution?  Gain practical suggestions from a dean who has enjoyed success in this area.
Speaker: Mary Mundt, PhD, Dean and Professor, College of Nursing, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI
  • Skills for Dealing with Change in the Academy
Dealing with academic programs in transition can lead to personal stress, but polishing selected personal characteristics can result in success.  Consider how the laws of simplicity can reframe our thinking about complex issues, and how new patterns of thinking can revitalize nursing education. Learn how these and other skills contribute to personal satisfaction and are critical to the success of your academic program.
Speaker: Michael Bleich, PhD, Dean and the Dr. Carol A. Lindeman Distinguished Professor, School of Nursing, Oregon Health and Science University, Portland, OR
