The popular Executive Development Series is
designed for new deans as well as for faculty members who
hold or aspire to leadership positions within the nursing
academic unit. The theme emphasizes practical approaches to
resolving issues of concern, and the conference offers opportunities
for academic leaders to think in new ways about both old and
new challenges and plan for a preferred future for nursing
education. The program is repeated from November 2004 when
registration approached the record high for this conference.

Opening Program Session
Future Planning: The Context of Nursing Education, Practice,
and Leadership
Reflect on how nursing education must be a good university
citizen as well as prepare practitioners for the health care
system's vital, complex future. Strategize how leaders can
help strengthen the nursing academic unit, convey nursing's
message to others, and improve the nursing school's position
on campus and in the community. Use the "future search"
framework to think about things differently and formulate
plans for your own institution. With colleagues, discuss the
practical issues and challenges facing nursing education and
begin to strategize solutions.
Speakers: Carole Anderson, PhD, RN, FAAN, Vice Provost
for Academic Administration, The Ohio State University, Columbus,
OH; Janet Allan, PhD, RN, CS, FAAN, Dean, School of Nursing,
University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD; John Lantz, PhD, RN,
Dean, School of Nursing, University of San Francisco, CA

Program Session
Achieving Enrollment Goals
In many schools, planning is underway for recruiting the entering
classes of fall 2005 and beyond. Whether your program is faced
with having too many or too few students, this session will
help you develop a better understanding of the enrollment
management approach and how you can use it to increase academic
quality and student diversity, enhance revenue, and efficiently
use scarce resources. Consider the processes and strategies
fundamental to building and shaping a student class, information
needed for your marketing communications, and development
of effective enrollment models. Participants will be encouraged
to discuss strategies in small groups.
Speakers: Eleanor V. Howell, PhD, RN, Dean, Creighton University
School of Nursing, and Don Bishop, Associate Vice President
for Enrollment Management, Creighton University, Omaha, NE
3:30-4:00 p.m.

Discussion on Expanding Capacity
In resource-constrained times, schools are developing increasing
numbers of creative approaches to maximize faculty resources
and accommodate larger number of students. What are your issues
regarding expanding capacity? What strategies have you found
helpful to create faculty resources or to locate new clinical
sites for students? Join colleagues in discussing how nursing
programs are overcoming these challenges and "doing more
with less."
Facilitator: Mary Beth Mathews, PhD, RN, BC, Chair, Department
of Nursing, University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT

Program Session
Finance 101: Issues in Financial Administration of Nursing
Programs
Academic nursing leaders are expected to develop and justify
accurate, adequate budgets for their schools' complex and
often changing missions, but even experienced leaders concede
lack of preparation for this task. As resources become more
austere, ideas for expanding capacity may have significant
financial implications. Learn practical lessons from a dean
who independently mastered the basic premises of financial
planning in order to represent her school more effectively
in this area. Topics include recognizing the importance of
financial data, issues and considerations in creating a nursing
education budget, and articulating the contributions of nursing
to the larger university. Discuss fiscal concerns and challenges
from your setting, and share successful strategies.
Speaker: Gloria Donnelly, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean, College
of Nursing and Health Professions, Drexel University, Philadelphia,
PA

Working Toward Nursing Education's Preferred Future
Strategic planning for a school of nursing depends on a vision
of where the nursing academic unit needs to be, and this is
based in large part on what the future holds for nursing and
nursing education as a whole. Join the AACN President to consider
how nurse educators can actively influence the planning process
to create a preferred future.
Speaker: Jean Bartels, PhD, RN, Chair, School of Nursing,
Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA and President,
American Association of Colleges of Nursing
