Cultural Competency Advisory Group

Charge to the Advisory Group on Cultural Competence and Baccalaureate Nursing Education
November 14, 2006

The advisory group will engage in a collaborative effort to develop a framework of expectations for baccalaureate nursing students to achieve cultural competence.  This work will culminate in a statement of outcome competencies that will assure that the learner is able to provide care that is culturally appropriate and sensitive.  The advisory group is also charged with assuring that a wide range of opinions and feedback are sought from representatives of higher education, professional nursing education and practice, and consumers in developing its recommendations.  The task force will:

  • Develop competencies related to cultural competence for baccalaureate nursing education.
  • Develop recommendations to integrate the development and refinement of skills associated with cultural competency in clinical training for nurses.
  • Develop a tool kit and resource materials to support the integration of cultural competency in baccalaureate nursing education and training programs, including an annotated bibliography, sample curricula, case studies, faculty development frameworks, and a list of experts.
  • Develop a partnership with the National Council on State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) to review the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) for content related to cultural competency.
  • Develop recommendations in a written report to the NCSBN and other stakeholders to incorporate additional content on cultural competency into the NCLEX.
  • Highlight cultural competency issues at AACN conferences and through efforts to produce a publishable paper.

Please address your comments to either the task force chair.
