Task Force on The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing

September 2008

Charge: The task force will develop a document that delineates the essential professional nursing competencies that should be acquired upon graduation from a master’s degree program in nursing. The task force is also charged with assuring that a wide range of opinions and feedback are sought from representatives of higher education, professional nursing education and practice, and consumers in developing its recommendations.  The task force will:

  1. Identify how healthcare trends and expectations will influence nursing’s role within healthcare delivery for the next decade.
  2. Assess the professional community's expectations for master's level nursing practice.
  3. Develop recommendations for the competencies for master' level nursing practice. These competencies will address new nursing knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate for nurses prepared at this level.
  4. Develop recommendations for the clinical learning experiences necessary to assure that master's graduates are prepared for safe and high quality nursing practice, irrespective of role.
  5. Recommend how this nursing knowledge can be used in a variety of roles.
  6. Identify the faculty, student, clinical learning, and other resources necessary to implement high quality learning experiences to achieve end-of-program competencies.
  7. Describe the essential elements of education and practice partnerships necessary to assure high quality learning experiences and to promote practice innovations which allow the master's prepared nurse to shape future care delivery models and outcomes.
  8. Develop a process to assure stakeholders’ consensus related to the competencies and clinical learning experiences for master's level practice.
  9. Develop recommendations and strategies for AACN and the full contingent of AACN’s academic programs to respond to the transition of master’s programs to advanced generalist education.

The revised Essentials for Master’s Education in Nursing should address articulation of the entry-level generalist nurse to master's level programs and the master's prepared nurse to doctoral education, either the DNP or the PhD.  The task force should take special care to assure that the expectations for master's level nursing practice are distinctly differentiated from those required for the baccalaureate degree preparing a generalist nurse and the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree preparing nurses in an area of advanced specialty practice. Further, these essentials should create a foundational set of expectations for professional practice that will prepare a professional for future career transitions and educational growth.

The task force should seek to complete its charge by July 2010 for review and potential approval by the AACN Board of Directors at the July 2010 board meeting and approval of the membership at the October 2010 semiannual meeting.

Please address your comments to either the task force chair or the AACN staff liaisons.
