First Annual Excellence in ELNEC Award Winners Named

The First Annual Excellence in End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Awards were presented on November 14th in Lake Buena Vista, FL at the 2002 Baccalaureate Education Conference. Congratulations to the following nursing school faculty members for leading innovative implementation of the ELNEC curriculum within twelve months of ELNEC training:

Ruth Ann Britnall
BSN Program Faculty

  • Added multiple texts to EOL collection
  • Increased journal collection, added: JPSM, Pall Care, JPC, ONF, Seminars in Oncology Nursing, CA Nursing & various hospice journals
  • Uses movie/TV clips to illustrate perspectives on death/dying & to stimulate conversations/discussions.
  • Internet "hunt" for website resources.
  • Rep/member of MI Partnership for Advancement in EOL care; in contact with other ELNEC trainers.
  • Participated in radio interview regarding EOLC in community.
  • Death/Dying multidisciplinary team at University.
  • EOLC nursing course is one of six courses in university themes; selection of six classes that focus on death, dying & views of society on EOLC.

Vicky Bowden
BSN Program Faculty

  • Attended EOL meeting sponsored by Education Development Center as a representative from SPN (Society of Pediatric Nurses), June 2001.
  • Lecture on "Grieving Normally" given out in Family Theory class was thrown out and replaced with the ELNEC lecture presentation to own students for the Family Theory class.
  • Copied 20 CDs of ELNEC program and distributed to faculty and nurses of SPN and members at the EDC Conference on EOL care.
  • Wrote 3 manuscripts for SPN newsletter about EOL articles.
  • SPN collaborating with APON, NANN, and NAPNAP to write "Precepts to Palliative Care for Children".
  • Appointed as EOL Project Director for SPN.
  • April 2002, attended pre-conference day at SPN Conference on "EOL Issues".
  • Completed "Pediatric Precepts of Palliative Care" with Last Acts.
  • Presented 1-hour presentation at Orange County SPN Conference, Feb. 2002. April 2002, 1-hour presentation at SPN National Conference in Washington, DC. Topic: "End-of-Life Resources for the Pediatric Nurse".

Kathy Czekanski
BSN Program Faculty

  • Lectured to students at TJU on "Pain and Symptom Mgmt".
  • Inclusion of "Communication", "Spirituality", and "Grief and Bereavement" introduced into the main junior class nursing program, Introduction to Professionalism course.
  • Purchased the video Caring for Mo.
  • Community Health course has added more content on "Hospice" as a community role as well as
  • Cultural and Ethical Issues Related to EOL Care".
  • Developed a modified version of two of the ELNEC case scenarios and used as post-conference discussions.
  • Included a member of the Hospital Pastoral Care Team as a speaker for junior students.
  • Senior students spend all day with a hospice nurse as part of their clinical rotation in Clinical Health.
  • Consult with the hospice agency in the community for education to their staff.
  • Thomas Jefferson Univ. was one of the pilot testing schools for student testing for the ELNEC 109-item questions.

Barbara Daniel
ADN Program Faculty

  • Great implementation & creativity of ELNEC.
  • Expanded nursing curriculum to include different aspects of EOL into each session.
    • Expanded content on sociocultural;
    • Expanded the content on legal issues to include more depth on EOL issues.
    • Have added 2 more hours to NUR 104 to include pain & sx mgmt, communication & achieving quality of life.
    • Expanded grief, loss & bereavement.
    • Looking at adding more discussion on the terminally ill child.
  • 2nd year students write a journal re: EOL issues and their responses to the 5 Wishes.
  • Presentation to Faculty re: ELNEC.
  • Clinical experience expanded to include hospice, long term care, and acute care facility of dying clients-which is helping discussion of "real" situations or questions that students encounter.
  • Cooperative agreement with local hospice association to offer scholarships to offset tuition for 11 credits of courses in the 4th semester. Criteria: volunteer 80 hrs of service, GPA=3.0, & letter of interest.
  • Awaiting response for approval of of a 3 unit course where 1 unit is volunteer time in a hospice.

Elizabeth Freeth
ADN Program Faculty

  • Summer 2002, offered an undergraduate elective course on "Palliative Care" and "End of Life Issues". Offered in a "dual-and-track format", meaning that nurses from the community who are interested in taking the course for CE credit do so without applying to the university.
  • Student project on "Pain Management" to the Basic Med-Surg course requirements. "Palliative Care Considerations" added to each body system as progressed through the content.
  • Focus Session discussions on various aspects of EOL care as part of post-conferences and labs in clinical rotation.
  • Negotiations with local hospice in Texas for a 2-day, 12-hour total clinical experience for 1st-year students to follow hospice nurses and participate in weekly multidisciplinary planning meetings as part of the Med-Surg Clinical Rotation.
  • A member of the Program Curriculum Committee advocating for EOL additions to the Advanced Med-Surg and Pediatric courses.
  • Feb 2002, was invited to become a member of the local chapter of the Texas Partnership for End-of-Life Care, a coalition of nurses, social workers, clergy, and interested persons from the community whose objective is to increase knowledge of EOL care in the lower Rio Grande Valley.
  • As a member of the Clinical Committee of the Texas Partnership, working on creating educational offerings for long-term care facility staff.

Maureen Goode
ADN Program Faculty

  • Collaborated with Pastoral Care Services Dept to help facilitate a program for nurses.
  • Coordinated an interdisciplinary hospital task force group developing a pilot research project for palliative care.
  • Disseminated ELNEC among other faculty members and curriculum reviewed to incorporate ELNEC materials into curriculum (is a member of that committee).
  • Altered ethical course to incorporate ethics module. This course is presented through the Humanities Dept and is offered not only to nursing students but radiology, PA students and the general public.
  • Formed and chair a task force group for pediatric palliative care and developed a business plan.
  • EOL education/presentations:
    • Nursing Grand Rounds: How can nursing help patients achieve the 'least worst death'.
    • 4th Annual Medstart Conference: Adding life to the child's years: The need for pediatric palliative care services .
    • Offered CE program in Sept, 2002 as joint effort with local hospice, hospital and university.
  • Collaborating with other state ELNEC trainers to present 4 regional programs throughout MI state.

Ann Pinner
ADN Program Faculty

  • Identified areas in nursing curriculum which EOL areas where repeated or lacking.
  • Held a faculty meeting 2/2/01 to review overlaps/lags of EOL content:
    • areas repeated (loss/grief);
    • areas not addressed (palliative care);
    • identified some areas need to be introduced much earlier in curriculum;
    • discussed significance of adding clinical experiences with dying patient.
  • Other faculty members utilized ELNEC resources/materials in curriculum:
    • use "In the Gloaming" video in therapeutic communication course;
    • content & handouts from pain module used in pharmacology course for discussion of analgesics;
    • loss & grief exercises used in mental health nursing course & in perinatal & pediatrics course.
  • Curriculum has 4 sequential nursing courses and EOL content is included in each course:
    • Course I (Foundations of Nursing): grief, loss, and personal assessment (3 hours);
    • Course II (Int Nursing Care): care of dying patient and family, communication (4 hours);
    • Course III (Maternal/Child/Women's Health): pediatric & perinatal aspects (3 hours);
    • Course IV (Advanced Nursing Care): ethical/legal, EOLC choices, hospice, palliative care (4 hours).
  • Collaboration among faculty to teach EOL content.

Linda Rodebaugh
ASN & BSN Program Faculty

  • Presentation of ELNEC to faculty, the ASN & BSN curriculum committee immediately after course and before the school year.
  • ASN faculty member utilized ELNEC slide contents and all ASN students participated in the pre/post test process.
  • All upper level BSN students participated in the pre/post test process.
  • Clinical experience now includes oncology & hospice experience.
  • Shared ELNEC information with physical therapy students.
  • Presented aspects of neonatal hospice (EOL) care to respiratory therapy students.
  • Gave presentation to parish nurses.
  • Integration of ELNEC content in BSN course in areas of communication, legal/ethical & cultural care.
  • Incorporated key ideas (communication) in presentation of "Coping with Death" unit as part of PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
  • Presented Module 1 to local SIGMA THETA TAU chapter.
  • Became more proficient in power point presentation thanks to ELNEC!!!

Roberta Stoops
BSN Program Faculty

  • ELNEC CD installed on share drive for all faculty.
  • Incorporated into Death, Dying & Grief lecture:
    • Communication
    • Culture
    • Elephant on the Table
    • Website access prior to lecture for resources, etc.
  • Pain/sx management ELNEC used in Summer, 2001 course to a group of senior nursing students from Oklahoma City Metro area schools.
  • Attended EPEC workshop & shared materials with faculty - stressed importance of MD's & RN's coming together to provide quality care at EOL.
  • Incorporating EOL care into course/lectures to demonstrate that does not happen when a patient is actively dying:
    • Pulmonary Rehab
    • Perioperative Nursing Care
    • Adult Maturation
    • Loss, Death, Dying & Grief.
  • Assigns dying patients to students.
  • Involved in Oklahoma statewide project to "Train the Trainer" 1st Workshop held April 18-19, 2002.

Sandra Walsh
BSN Program Faculty

  • Nurs 504 "Topics in Oncology Nursing" revised, funded & 2 new professors (ethics & EOL experts) co-teaching.
  • Working with MD from School of Medicine to incorporate EOL course.
  • Introduce "Artkart" at bedside of patients in a cancer center. Trained 3 "artists" and 3 students to use "Artkart".
  • Working with other clinical agencies to incorporate art activities with vulnerable populations.
  • Appointed to assist BSN faculty to integrate concepts into existing courses.
  • Clinical placement of students in oncology units/bereavement groups.
  • Submission of manuscripts and artwork to nursing journals on EOL issues.
  • Textbook of Palliative Nursing required in one of elective classes.

Shirley Woolf
ASN & BSN Program Faculty

  • GREAT integration of ELNEC into nursing curriculum!!
  • Presented ELNEC to faculty groups and curriculum committees.
  • Worked with professor from another school (South Bend Indiana University) in presenting ELNEC to the 8 IU campuses.
  • Shared ELNEC with 3 school departments: Adult Health, Environment for Health, & Family Health.
  • Working on a committee to see how the 15 core competencies of EOL are threaded throughout the curriculum.
  • Students assigned to critical care areas are given integration of EOL which include pain mgmt, ethical/legal issues, culture considerations, and what is palliative care.
  • Have been contacted by 3 hospitals as a resource person.
  • Participated in the ELNEC student test question evaluation process. Students were given ELNEC materials in preparation after the pre-test process. This caused great interest among the students.
  • Contacted several Hospices and Palliative Care units to place students for clinical experiences.
  • Even though Indiana University faculty thinks there are curriculum restraints to include EOL, Shirley Woolf still encourages faculty to use the resources to try to implement without inventing anything new. Faculty feedback has been positive.
  • Brings in EOL/Palliative Care speakers to speak to students.
  • Awareness of students, faculty, and staff of Midwest Bioethics initiatives "Caring Conversations", and general overall awareness of resources related to EOL and Palliative care.
  • Continues to be involved with Indiana Initiatives related to end-of-life care: helping to bring information to the community related to these issues; involved with EOL and Palliative care workshops.
  • A future goal is to have a Master's Program in Palliative Care at Indiana University.

Melinda Zimmer-Rankin
BSN Program Faculty

  • Developed 4 hour EOL lab for sophomore nursing students which includes:
    • Showing of "Caring for Mo"
    • Discussion of each ELNEC module
    • Exercise for students which illustrates their own preferences at the time of death.
  • Identified EOL resources.
  • Guest speaker:
    • Nurse educators in Maine
    • Maine Hospice Council.
  • Added EOL research topic to Jr. level paper to include:
    • EOL case study
    • Review of the literature
    • 8-10 pages focusing on nursing interventions to ensure/promote quality EOL care.
  • Worked with Nursing Department to formulate/incorporate the words "End of Life" in curriculum.
  • Seniors graduating are given "EOL" certificates at pinning.
  • Hyperlink to online resources for lecture presentation.
  • EOL poster outlining components of 9 ELNEC modules.
  • Nursing department held conference 5/31/02 - One of sessions discussed ELNEC curriculum
    • another session discussed holistic healing.
  • Assigns dying patients/experiences to student.
