Excellence in ELNEC Award Winners Named

Excellence in End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Award winners have been named for the November 15-17, 2001 course. Congratulations to the following individuals for leading innovative implementation of the ELNEC curriculum within twelve months of their ELNEC training:

Bonnie Garner, Western Carolina University (NC)
Diana Hershey, Wells House Hospice (CA)
Nancy Joyner, Altru Hospice/Home Services in Grand Forks (ND)
Mary Lou Pederson, Northwest Renal Network (WA)

Bonnie Garner

  • Adapted ELNEC with Pediatric emphasis by adding foundational information and case studies to the seminar in Pediatrics that addresses Children's Grief and Palliative care issues and continues in the curriculum.
  • Modules 6 and 7 were foundations for a seminar "Breaking Bad News" at a national neonatal/pediatric conference.
  • In-services on children's grief presented to community & mental health providers.
  • Integrative complementary therapies taught as elective to students and as a continuing education course.
  • Prepared and submitted a manuscript "Preparing pediatric nurses for excellence in palliative care".

Diana Hershey

  • Creative outreach to the community in nursing, clergy, and other disciplines.
  • Implemented interdisciplinary bereavement group for staff.
  • Held memorial service that included slide show, live music, poetry reading, and candle lighting. There was also abook of names in calligraphy and those who attended received a sprig of "rosemary" for remembrance and made flower petal sachets to give to family members.
  • Reached out to local nursing and medical schools to contract the use of their institution (hospice) as a clinical site. Within the year, she has been able to contract to have 21 new students/month for 26 clinical days.
  • Lectured at area colleges: spoke in nursing program for Death and Dying course; and spoke for the Mortuary Science class on end-of-life care.
  • Has in-serviced three SNFs in the community on end-of-life care. Plans to continue to in-service one SNF per month.
  • Has sent out mailing to area clergy for luncheon seminar on end-of-life care.
  • Submitted a proposal to administration for incentives for RN and CNA staff to become Hospice and Palliative Certified.

Nancy Joyner

  • Innovative in working with the state to expand end-of-life care and education at the state level.
  • Works with North Dakota Nursing Association Nursing Practice Council on end-of-life and pain management goals for the state as the two top practice issues for the coming year
  • Developing Web site and networking with the State.
  • Working with University of North Dakota regarding on-campus end-of-life courses and curriculum development.
  • Has conducted an ELNEC Train the Trainers course; 38 nurses from throughout the state attended.
  • Monthly in-services for Home Care staff.
  • Convinced administration fto pursue end-of-life education for staff.
  • Designing a palliative care team with a physician.
  • Presenting on-going education to staff, UND students, Fargo staff, Social work conference staff.
  • Personal goal: accepted into PhD nursing program; research will focus on assessing needs of rural nurses nationwide regarding pain management provided at the end of life.

Mary Lou Pederson

  • Unique opportunity to network and present end-of-life issues in a less traditional practice setting (renal).
  • Has conducted four training courses in four different states in order to spread the word: Alaska, Montana, Washington, and Oregon.
  • Networking has been with non-ELNEC contacts--mostly with renal/nephrology nurses.
  • Made Board of Directors and Medical Review Board aware of ELNEC training and increased awareness of EOL education support for staff.
  • Contributes to the newsletter (renal) about EOL issues.
  • Does ELNEC "promos" when presenting at national conferences (ie 10-15 minute presentations on grief & loss, or overview on end-of-life) to increase awareness of the need for further training in end-of-life care.
