Excellence in End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Award winners have been named for the June 20-22, 2002 Undergraduate ELNEC Course. Congratulations to the following individuals for leading innovative implementation of the ELNEC curriculum within twelve months of their ELNEC training:

Ann Marie Kelly, BSN

  • Shared ELNEC with other disciplines within the institution.
  • Offered CE program with ELNEC materials and content to area hospitals, long-term facilities, home health care, and other health care providers.
  • Attended the meeting that initiated the Massachusetts Pain Initiative and was instrumental in including end-of-life in the initiative.
  • Appointed chair of the Education committee for the Massachusetts Pain Initiative.
  • Included end-of-life education, using ELNEC content, in Diocesan Health Facilities (group of 5 long-term facilities) in orientation and for new graduate nurses. An annual review is mandatory for all clinical professionals.

Kay (Kathleen) McClain, MSN

  • Instrumental in having a position statement written for Emergency Nurses Association on "End-of-Life Care in the Emergency Department" (http://www.ena.org/about/position/endoflife.asp).
  • Member of the ENA Geriatric Task Force which produced a one day course
  • Asked to write a new chapter for the 6th edition of the Emergency Nursing Manual on "End-of-Life Issues" due for publication September 2004.
  • Speaking engagements:
    • 9/03: Annual ENA meeting on Prep/Care @ Time of Death (along with communication);
    • 11/02: Boston ENA chapter: Symptom Management;
    • 12/02: Central MA ENA chapter: Symptom Management;
    • 11/03: Massachusetts (audience of 100); and
    • 10/03: Florida (audience of 200 various health care providers).
  • Article published--McClain K, Perkins P. (2002). Terminally ill patients in the emergency department: a practical overview of end-of-life issues. Journal of Emergency Nursing, 28(6):515-22.
  • Other publications: 2/03: ENA newsletter; 7/03: interview for "Emergency Nursing" update both on EOL.

Barbara Richards, MSN

  • Presented ELNEC to hospital leadership (Patient Care Council), which formed a committee to conduct a palliative care institutional assessment. Determined what was "present" or "not-present" in institution and devise a plan.
  • Determined educational needs of hospital nursing staff:
    • Identify pts near EOL in a timely manner;
    • Improve comfort level & communication skills of caregivers caring for loved ones @ EOL;
    • How to deal with individual & cultural diversity; and
    • Improve pain management.
  • Identify members for interdisciplinary team for palliative care management.
  • Updated hospital Standards of Care and policies & procedures regarding EOL.
  • Survey of physicians (ongoing).
  • Offered all nine modules (4 x). Participants included: nursing, pastoral care, dieticians, cancer center abstractors, parish nurses, and student nurses with instructor.
  • Four modules presented to the Graduate nurse internship program.
  • Plans for future include disseminating ELNEC to nursing schools, emergency medical services and church groups in collaboration with other ELNEC trainers in the Florida area.

Katie Schatz, RN

  • Provided ELNEC information to the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Ethics work group. The group then wrote monthly end-of-life publications for the organization newsletter (ANEW).
  • Developed 6 articles for continuing education; one was published on the organization Web site and five were published in the American Journal of Critical Care Nurses.
  • Planned to have EOL concurrent education sessions (11 sessions) at The National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition 2003 in San Antonio, TX (6300 participants).

Laura Williams, BSN

  • Incorporated EOL competencies within institution for staff & new hires by:
    • Attending staff meetings on all nursing units (19) in the hospital to explain the palliative care program;
    • Gained administrative support to provide EOL education for nursing & medical staff (including ICU);
    • Designed specific ELNEC for 4 critical care units;
    • Connected with other Atlanta area ELNEC trainers to assist with training;
    • Added EOL education/station to annual skill lab validation; and
    • Palliative care added to new orientation.
  • Collaborated with other area ELNEC trainers to offer courses for local oncology nurses, hospice nurses, and student nurses. Provided three ELNEC courses in 2003.
  • Contacted area schools of nursing to incorporate ELNEC materials into undergraduate & graduate curriculum.
  • Provided a palliative care rotation for nursing interns.
  • Provided a seminar on ethics for senior nursing students (Spring, 2003).
  • Continues to speak in the community:
    • Local & Regional AACN (critical care) chapters
    • CDC Cancer Conference
    • Georgia Organization of Nursing Leaders
