End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) - Geriatric

On February 1 & 2, 2007, 82 participants from 50 cities/towns across the state of California, representing 37 various geriatric institutions and organizations, attended the first ELNEC-Geriatric course in Long Beach, CA.

The ELNEC-Geriatric course was adapted specifically to fit the unique educational needs for those who work in geriatric settings such as Long Term Care (LTC), Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF), and hospices who provide care in LTC and SNF's. In addition, nurses who work with the elderly in clinics, acute care facilities, homecare settings and nursing faculty who teach geriatric curriculum are invited to attend future ELNEC-Geriatrics courses.

ELNEC-Geriatric, like the other ELNEC courses, is a train-the-trainer course. Participants are provided with course syllabus, CD, reference books, supplemental teaching materials, and resource lists, so that when they return to their institution, they can teach the content to their colleagues and affiliated staff. ELNEC-Geriatrics also includes teaching modules for nursing assistants who provide a significant amount of care in geriatric settings.

The ELNEC Project Team is grateful to the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) for providing funding for the development of the ELNEC-Geriatric curriculum and for supporting the first course.
