The
first Oncology ELNEC course was held February 19-21, 2004
in Pasadena, CA. Sixty-three oncology nurses, representing
25 states and 34 ONS chapters participated. Staff nurses,
nursing administrators, nurse practitioners, educators,
clinical nurse specialists, and case managers working in
hospitals, hospices, clinics, nursing homes and universities
were represented.
The
City of Hope Cancer Center was awarded a grant from the
National Cancer Institute (NCI) to lead an educational initiative
entitled, "Oncology Nursing Education in End of Life
Care (ONE-EOLC)." This oncology-training project builds
on the core End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)
that was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The
grant will span July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2008. The
primary purpose of the grant is to improve end-of-life care
for cancer patients through a national network of oncology
nurses belonging to chapters of the Oncology Nursing Society
(ONS), with support from the American Association of Colleges
of Nursing (AACN).
The ELNEC-Oncology curriculum has been updated and incorporated into ELNEC-SuperCore. During an ELNEC-SuperCore train-the-trainer course, oncology, nurses will have the opportunity to review case studies and participate in a role play specifically centered on patienct with cancer.
