The Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice
Harvard Medical School Course Offering
Specialized Pediatric Track!
April 27, 2010 - May 4, 2010 & November 9-15, 2010
The Harvard Medical School Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice offers intensive learning experience for physician and nurse-educators who wish to become expert in the clinical practice and teaching of comprehensive, interdisciplinary palliative care, as well as to gain expertise in leading and managing improvements in palliative care education and practice at their own institutions. The course is delivered in two sections:

Part 1: Teaching and Learning in Palliative Care consists of 7 days of intensive learning, followed by a 6-month interim where participants work on an individual project and contribute to weekly discussions of problematic cases presented by other participants through e-mail exchanges; and

Part 2: Building a Future in Palliative Care, is a second 7-day block that includes continued experiential learning and leadership.

"The First International Multidisciplinary Forum on Palliative Care”, which will be held on November 11-14, 2010 at Budapest, Hungary.
This conference is aimed for all health professionals that treat adults and children though their main area of occupation is not palliative care.
The conference will include mini-courses on symptom management, workshops for coping mechanisms with the dying child, update lectures on different topics, and more. The conference will include participants from all over Europe and South America. The lectures and workshops will be held by senior palliative care professionals in Europe and North America. The Institute for Palliative Medicine (IPM) focuses on the palliative care education and research for healthcare professionals. IPM provides training to over 2,000 healthcare professionals annually, conducts research studies to improve care for patients with advanced illnesses and also has an online store for palliative care educational products.  www.palliativemed.org

PAL-MED CONNECT®  is a grant-funded palliative medicine resource hotline. The hotline is open to healthcare professionals to call in whenever they have any questions regarding palliative care.  PAL-MED CONNECT®  receives calls from physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists who have questions about pain and symptom management, opioid conversion, difficult family conversations, etc.  www.palmedconnect.org 

The IPAL-ICU Project
The IPAL-ICU Project provides essential tools and resources to support the improvement of palliative care for all ICU patients and their families. IPAL-ICU is committed to assisting providers across disciplines to deliver outstanding palliative care as an integral component of comprehensive critical care, from the time of ICU admission, regardless of prognosis. Advocacy Opportunities

Advance Directives
As healthcare leaders, you know and appreciate the importance of establishing advance directives and the problems that arise when patients and families have not taken the time to consider their "end-of-life" options. These are issues that affect all of us.
