The John A. Hartford Foundation/AACN Creating Careers scholarship program requires all of its geriatric advanced practice nursing scholars to attend a leadership conference sponsored by the Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative. These annual conferences, each year located in different American cities, are routinely scheduled to "piggy-back" with the Gerontological Society of America’s annual meetings.
The conferences expose the scholarship recipients to exciting gerontological nursing research and provide opportunities to network with notable experts in the field and with the American Academy of Nursing’s doctoral scholars (whose scholarships are also Hartford-funded). Through the grant years, the Leadership Conference content expanded to more directly focus on the needs of Creating Careers scholars. It evolved to include more Creating Careers-specific sessions, more interaction, and more opportunities for scholars to develop their networking skills. Scholars also assess their conference experiences during closing sessions.
