Contemporary Gerontological Nursing
Drexel University

Lessons Learned/Advice to Schools

  1. Unless gerontology nursing fuses with technology, the specialty will be unable to keep students interested, and will not survive. It is imperative that gerontology nursing coursework be web based, and that it sponsor the use of technologically advanced assessment tools.

  2. A stand alone gerontology course has great appeal at the senior level for all students if it is designed as a synthesis course--in other words, a course for bringing together all the knowledge and experience the students have to that point and allowing them to use it to advance their critical thinking skills and their abilities to holistically care for patients using every aspect of the nursing process. Such a course supports their assessment skills and patient teaching skills and offers opportunities for integration of disease processes, treatment regimens and nursing care.

  3. Students respect content that is rigorous and tough.
