Lessons Learned/Advice to Schools

  1. Experiences with community-based elders should be incorporated into all nursing curricula, given that most of our country's elderly citizens live independently.

  2. A focus on the positive aspects of aging, such as grand parenting, helps nursing students develop positive attitudes about aging.

  3. International experiences with aging contribute to student development of a global perspective regarding aging, and promote increased sensitivity about cultural implications of nursing care.

  4. Students must be prepared to work with culturally diverse elderly, as well as those from underserved populations, including minorities and refugees.
