International Perspectives on Issues of Aging
Otterbein University
Lessons
Learned/Advice to Schools
- Experiences with community-based elders should be incorporated
into all nursing curricula, given that most of our country's
elderly citizens live independently.
- A focus on the positive aspects of aging, such as grand
parenting, helps nursing students develop positive attitudes
about aging.
- International experiences with aging contribute to student
development of a global perspective regarding aging, and
promote increased sensitivity about cultural implications
of nursing care.
- Students must be prepared to work with culturally diverse
elderly, as well as those from underserved populations,
including minorities and refugees.
