PROCESSES OF AGING

Course Description:
This course provides an in-depth analysis of specific concepts related to alterations in health of the older adult, especially the frail older adult. The focus is placed on research-based interventions to guide practice to assist older adults to cope with chronic alterations in health. Emphasis is to improving quality of care for the most frail and disable older adults across the continuum of long term care.

Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • develop a knowledge base of specific concepts and nursing management strategies to promote health of frail older adults.
  • explore innovative nursing interventions for older adults with complex health problems incorporating formal and informal resources.
  • analyze selected problems to improving patient outcomes across different types of health care settings across the continuum of care.
  • discuss selected Gerontological case studies utilizing an expanded knowledge base derived from current practice and research in Gerontological literature.

Course Requirements:

  • Class Participation - students are expected to participate in the discussion board area from the required and assigned readings
  • Completion of an evidenced based management protocol paper. From the literature, the student will develop a management protocol to predict a successful outcome for a long-term care problem.
  • Completion of two written case presentations. Students will be given case studies reflecting clinical problems encountered in frail older adults. Strategies for assessment and management will be discussed.
  • A final written exam will be administered.

For graduate credit, students will design a project to determine the effectiveness of the intervention chosen in the Management Protocol paper.

Students are also expected to evaluate the course by completing a standardized course evaluation form (CEQ & FEQ)
