AACN Public Policy Internship

Program Description
The AACN Public Policy Internship offers student nurses the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the process of policy formation. Students are placed with various AACN directors with experience in health policy, quality/patient safety, nursing education, geriatric nursing, or end of life care. Internships are designed in collaboration with the student based on the student's goals and objectives. AACN requires the intern to accomplish a project that benefits the student as well as AACN. The time frame of each internship is individually arranged, although a minimum of four weeks of working 2-3 days a week is required. Interns are responsible for making their own living arrangements. There is no stipend for this program and no continuing education credits will be awarded.

Eligibility
The program is open to all students in AACN member institutions. Applicants must have a strong interest in and commitment to the advancement of nursing through policy development. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing or who have obtained a graduate degree in nursing. Previous coursework and/or experience in government, political activities, and familiarity with current issues and directions in nursing are desirable.

Applications
Applicants should submit the appropriate form to AACN and include their curriculum vitae or resumé. Each application must be accompanied by two letters of support addressing the applicant's interest, ability, and commitment to the representation of nursing concerns through the policy, political, legislative, or regulatory processes. A personal or telephone interview may also be required.
