Dr.
Ellen Olshansky Appointed Editor of the Journal of Professional
Nursing
WASHINGTON,
DC, January 24, 2003 - The American Association of Colleges
of Nursing (AACN) is pleased to announce that Ellen Olshansky,
DNSc, RNC, professor and chair of the Department of Health
and Community Systems at the University of Pittsburgh School
of Nursing, has been named the editor of the Journal
of Professional Nursing. Dr. Olshansky replaces Eleanor
Sullivan, PhD, RN, FAAN, who finished her five-year term
as editor on December 31, 2002.
"Ellen
Olshansky brings new energy, ideas, and creativity to her
role as journal editor," said AACN President Kathleen
Ann Long, PhD, RNCS, FAAN. "We applaud her desire to
use the journal to create a community of scholars and provide
a forum to explore the contemporary and controversial issues
confronting nursing today."
Dr.
Olshansky has enjoyed a distinguished career as a nurse
educator, researcher, and leader. She received three professional
nursing degrees from the University of California, San Francisco,
including a Doctor of Nursing Science, Master of Science
in Nursing, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her educational
credentials also include a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare
from the University of California, Berkeley. From 1985 to
1996, Dr. Olshansky served on the faculty of the University
of Washington in Seattle before joining the faculty at Duquesne
University in Pittsburgh. She is a women's health care nurse
practitioner who recently completed a post-graduate program
at Duquesne University to become a clinical specialist in
psychiatric-mental health nursing. Her research focuses
on women's health, infertility, and depression.
Last
year, Dr. Olshansky was selected from more than a hundred
applicants to be a 2002 Fellow of the Leadership for Academic
Nursing Program. Supported by the Helene Fuld Health Trust
and AACN, the program is designed to enhance the leadership
capabilities of individuals aspiring to lead academic nursing
organizations and those new to the role of chief academic
administrator of baccalaureate or graduate nursing programs.
Dr. Olshansky also has been an active participant in AACN's
faculty development programs, including several Doctoral
Education Conferences.
"The
Journal of Professional Nursing has been and will
continue to be a strong mechanism through which we can communicate,
discuss, and debate strategies for addressing the many challenges
within our discipline," said Dr. Olshansky. "In
my role as editor, I will continue to encourage critical
thinking among the readership by emphasizing timely issues,
embracing various perspectives, and providing a venue for
open dialogue and debate."
Now
in its 19th year, the Journal of Professional Nursing
strives to keep pace with continuing changes and professional
standards that affect nursing education, research, and practice.
This bimonthly publication presents observations by nursing
leaders on the diverse roles of baccalaureate- and graduate-prepared
nurses, as well as insightful columns on clinical, legislative,
regulatory, and ethical issues of vital interest to stakeholders
within the nursing profession. For more information about
the journal, visit the following Web address: http://www.aacn.nche.edu/Publications/jpn.htm.

nursing education, assist deans and directors to implement
those standards, influence the nursing profession to improve
health care, and promote public support of baccalaureate
and graduate nursing education, research, and practice.
