WASHINGTON, DC, and MAYNARD,
MA, July 26, 2005 - Monster Healthcare and the American
Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) today announced
the creation of a new scholarship program to address the
growing shortage of nurse educators. The Monster Healthcare-AACN
Nursing Faculty Scholarship is designed to increase the
number of nurse educators needed to expand student capacity
in entry-level nursing programs.
"All efforts to address the shortage
of nurses in the U.S. will fail unless we focus on increasing
the supply of faculty needed to prepare new nurses,"
said AACN President Jean E. Bartels. "AACN applauds
Monster Healthcare for recognizing one of the root causes
of our nation's current nursing shortage and taking decisive
action to address this concern."
Last year, AACN found that more than 32,000
qualified students were turned away from baccalaureate
and graduate nursing programs due largely to a shortage
of faculty. The Monster Healthcare-AACN Nursing Faculty
Scholarship program was created to help increase the pool
of doctorally-prepared nursing faculty needed to help
bridge the faculty gap at schools nationwide. Students
enrolled in either a Baccalaureate to Doctoral degree
or a Doctor of Nursing Practice program will be eligible
to apply for scholarship funding. Five scholarships in
the amount of $25,000 will be awarded in Fall 2005. Students
will be expected to use this money to cover living expenses
which will allow the student to attend school full-time.
In addition to providing scholarship funds,
Monster Healthcare will also provide students with part-time
jobs (a minimum of 10 hours a week) to enhance the students'
clinical experiences and give award recipients health
benefits while enrolled in school. Upon graduation, students
will be expected to serve in a teaching capacity at a
nursing school for a minimum of one year for every year
scholarship monies were received.
"This innovative faculty development program is quite
timely given the large wave of nursing school faculty
retirements expected over the next 10 years" added
Dr. Bartels. "These scholarships will enable students
to complete doctoral programs without an interruption
in study which will succeed in bringing younger teachers
into the profession. AACN hopes this program will serve
as a model for other corporate citizens to follow."
"Monster Healthcare is proud to be
aligned with the AACN in this effort to provide assistance
for students who are dedicating their careers to teaching
in the nursing profession," said Michelle Abbey,
President, TMP Worldwide Advertising & Communications
and leader of Monster Healthcare. "We are pleased
to be able to offer our resources to address the changing
recruitment needs within the nursing industry."
Complete scholarship information, including
award criteria and an application for Fall 2005 awards,
will be posted on the AACN Web site on August 15, 2005
with an application deadline of September 30, 2005. Winners
will be chosen by a selection committee and notified by
mid-October if their application was selected.
