AACN, NONPF COLLABORATE TO JOINTLY
COLLECT DATA ON NURSE PRACTITIONER EDUCATION
Agreement Will Create Single Data Source
for Health Workforce Planning
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 26, 1998 -- Under
a new collaborative agreement, the American Association of
Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the National Organization of
Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) have announced they will
jointly collect data on the nation's nurse practitioner education
programs.
Aimed at establishing the most complete and
accurate repository of data on nurse practitioner (NP) education
in the U.S., the partnership will not only alleviate the duplicate
effort of processing surveys that each organization had conducted
separately, but will also create a single data source to support
health workforce planning and policy analysis.
The initiative's first effort, collection of
data on NP student enrollments and graduations, began with
the mailing of AACN's annual data survey earlier this fall.
AACN will administer data collection for this first collaborative
survey; NONPF will contribute towards analysis of the data.
"This important collaboration is an unprecedented
win-win opportunity both for data providers and users,"
says AACN President Andrea R. Lindell, DNSc, RN. "Joint
ownership of the data by AACN and NONPF will result in a creation
of a centralized national database for outside reporting,
greatly cutting users' time in searching for the most authoritative
data available on NP educational programs and easing the burden
for survey respondents."
"NONPF is proud to be part of this groundbreaking
collaboration which will improve the quality of nurse practitioner
educational program data. Through this agreement, both organizations
have committed to a visionary approach to data collection
rather than the development of reactionary or interim surveys,"
says NONPF President Christine A. Boodley, PhD, RN, FNP. Since
1994, NONPF's data collection efforts on NP educational programs
have been supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
The two organizations will share the costs
of data collection and contribute professional support. A
committee of AACN and NONPF representatives will consult annually
to develop a long-range strategic plan to determine the types
of data central to NP workforce and educational issues.
Following the fall 1998 enrollments and graduations
survey, the organizations will assess other areas for data
collaboration.
The American Association of Colleges of
Nursing is the national voice for university and four-year-college
education programs in nursing. Representing more than 580
member schools of nursing at public and private institutions
nationwide, AACN's educational, research, governmental advocacy,
data collection, publications, and other programs work to
establish quality standards for bachelor's- and graduate-degree
nursing education, assist deans and directors to implement
those standards, influence the nursing profession to improve
health care, and promote public support of baccalaureate and
graduate nursing education, research, and practice. Web site:

The National Organization of Nurse
Practitioner Faculties is dedicated to providing leadership
in promoting quality nurse practitioner education. Inherent
in that commitment is the goal of establishing standards of
quality and developing instructional skills and scientific
investigation in nurse practitioner education. Through these
and other related initiatives, NONPF strives to serve the
public interest by assuring the preparation of highly qualified
health care professionals.
