Maximize
your membership in the American Association of Colleges
of Nursing (AACN) by becoming a leader within our organization.
AACN provides many opportunities for members to have an
impact on nursing education at the national level through
participation on task forces, committees, the Board of Directors,
and in other high profile capacities. These opportunities
facilitate leadership development and allow members to concentrate
on areas of particular interest.
AACN
realizes that its success is driven by its membership, and
we are proud that more than 20% of our members currently
serve in leadership capacities within the association. We
also understand that if more members are actively engaged
in the organization, AACN's policies and decisions will
reflect more closely the views of our constituents.
We
encourage you to consider becoming a leader among leaders
by volunteering your time and energy to advancing AACN's
mission and goals.
Leadership
Opportunities
Typically,
members are involved in the work of AACN in a progression
that often begins with service on task forces, subcommittees,
committees, and special appointments. Members would then
have the service experience to be selected for placement
on the ballot for an elected position. The Nominating Committee,
an elected committee, is comprised of senior leadership
in the organization and comes later in the progression.
Task
Force Participation:
Task forces are established by the AACN Board of Directors
to focus on issues of primary concern to nursing school
deans and faculty. Recent task forces have prepared action
plans and recommendations to address leadership transition,
education and regulation for professional nursing, the professional
clinical doctorate.
Time commitment:
Task forces generally meet twice a year during the Spring
Annual and Fall Semiannual Meetings as well as via regular
conference calls. Some task forces require additional in-person
meetings.
Subcommittee
Membership:
Subcommittees are established to focus on a specific task
or to plan AACN's annual conferences including the Baccalaureate,
Master's and Doctoral Education Conferences. The Mentoring
Subcommittee works to coordinate the New Dean Mentoring
Program. Time
commitment:
Subcommittees generally meet twice a year during the Spring
Annual and Fall Semiannual Meetings as well as via regular
conference calls.
Committee
Membership:
Committees support the work of the AACN Board in five areas
and allow members to use their expertise to move the organization
forward. The committees include Finance, Governmental Affairs,
Membership, Program, and Nominating.
Time commitment:
Committees generally meet twice a year during the Spring
Annual and Fall Semiannual Meetings as well as via regular
conference calls.
Special
Appointments: Members are often asked to represent AACN
on expert panels, national committees, and at regional conferences
as opportunities arise. Appointments are made based on subject
matter expertise and member interest.
Testimony
Before Congress:
AACN actively works with members to identify opportunities
to provide testimony at congressional hearings on issues
related to nursing education and research. The Governmental
Affairs staff works with members to define messages and
prepare comments.
Elected
Positions - Board of Directors
and Nominating
Committee: AACN's Board of Directors governs the organization
by setting priorities and taking strategic action. Elected
board positions include the President, President-Elect,
Secretary, Treasurer and seven Board Members-at-Large (click
here to view the Call for
Nominations). The Nominating Committee determines member's
interest in serving on the Board of Directors and the Nominating
Committee, and prepares the slate of candidates for the
annual election.
Time
commitment:
Board membership requires a significant time commitment
including quarterly meetings, monthly conference calls,
and participation on external committees, panels, and events
as the AACN representative. The Nominating Committee meets
twice a year during the Spring Annual and Fall Semiannual
Meetings as well as via regular conference calls.
