Employers | Schools of Nursing The
American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is pleased to host the Professional
Nursing Network (PNN), the only Web resource dedicated to matching graduates
of baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in nursing with employers that value
their education. This online directory features employers nationwide who are looking
to recruit nurses with baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees. These employers
acknowledge that nurses with higher levels of education bring unique skills to
the practice setting. Why launch
the Professional Nursing Network? In January 2002, AACN released
a White Paper on the Hallmarks
of the Professional Nursing Practice Environment to match graduates of baccalaureate
(BSN) and higher degree programs in nursing with employers that value their education.
In this landmark paper, AACN encourages registered nurses to seek out practice
settings that acknowledge the connection between education and clinical competency,
support advanced nursing education, and demonstrate a commitment to high quality
patient care. Though many Internet
sites are available for nurses seeking employment, there are no Web resources
exclusively dedicated to helping BSN and higher degree nurses locate employers
who value the skills these nurses bring to the workplace. The PNN serves as a
directory to steer nurses to professional practice environments. Will
the Network help address the nursing shortage? Yes. Finding the right
practice environment is essential to a nurse's long-term success, job satisfaction,
and retention. Many
reports point to low nurse retention as a contributing factor to the nursing
shortage. Employers that value education foster a culture of retention by providing
nurses with opportunities to build new skills, explore different roles, and climb
the clinical and administrative ladder. By matching nurses with the right work
setting, the registered nurse enjoys the opportunity to practice to his or her
potential, taking full advantage of educational preparation. What
kind of information is captured on the Network? Each Network listing includes
employer contact information, a Web link, and details on how education is recognized
and rewarded at these facilities. These details may include a nursing career ladder
program, tuition reimbursement for educational advancement, compensation levels
congruent with education, BSN/MSN required positions, student loan repayment programs,
differentiated nursing practice, and partnerships with four-year colleges and
universities. Employers provided the information for their individual listings.
The Network also includes a Career Resource section with links to career profiles,
interview questions, and alternate sources for online job listings. Who
will use the Professional Nursing Network? In addition to the practicing
nurse workforce, over 30,000 new nurses graduate with baccalaureate and graduate
degrees each year. AACN will work with our members and the full body of nursing
schools to encourage graduates to begin their job search by using the Network.
We will also encourage schools of nursing to link directly with the Network to
better facilitate access by graduating nurses. Does
the Network include information on faculty vacancies? Yes. The Network
contains a special section called Faculty
Career Link to advertise vacancies at schools of nursing nationwide. Faculty
considering a career move and those seeking to join the faculty ranks are encouraged
to use this resource. Specific

Seeking Employment For the new nurse graduate and practicing nurse, the
Network will assist you in finding employers that value your education and allow
you to practice to your full potential. We encourage you to use the PNN as an
essential career planning tool and expect that you will follow-up with employers
to obtain a full explanation of the benefits included with each Network listing.
Please note that AACN cannot officially endorse any of the employers listed on
the Network. Nurses seeking employment are encouraged to read AACN's brochure
on What Nursing Graduates
Should Consider When Seeking Employment and access the CampusRN/AACN
Career Center. Employers
Employers wishing to be listed on the Network must first complete a brief survey
online or by
fax. Nurse employers who submit the survey and demonstrate a commitment to
nursing education will be listed for free on the Network. Employers wishing broader
exposure may opt to place a banner advertisement or customized Web link on the
Network. Click here for details
on advertising options and to download the insertion
order form. Employers are encouraged to read AACN's White Paper on the professional
nursing practice environment. Schools
of Nursing Nursing programs at colleges and universities across the country
have partnered with AACN to launch the Professional Nursing Network. All
schools are encouraged to link directly with the Network to facilitate career
planning for graduating nurses. Schools looking to expand their internal promotion
of the PNN are encouraged to email us for assistance. For
