The CCNE Task Force on Post-Baccalaureate Nurse Residency Program Accreditation has engaged over the past two years in the standards development process. To view the composition of the task force, click here. In February-March 2007, and again in July-August 2007, constituents were invited to comment on the most recent draft of the standards. After each call for comments, the task force considered all comments received and made revisions based on that feedback. The March 2007 Proposed Standards document was approved by the CCNE Board of Commissioners in April 2007. The Board approved the final standards document in April 2008 and voted to create a Residency Accreditation Committee to oversee the development of the procedures and review process.
The standards are congruent with the post-baccalaureate nurse residency curriculum that was developed through a partnership between AACN and UHC. Four broad accreditation standards are proposed--each with a series of key elements--related to Faculty (Standard I); Institutional Commitment and Resources (Standard II); Curriculum, including Leadership, Patient Outcomes, and Professional Role (Standard III); and Program Effectiveness (Standard IV). Examples of evidence have been identified for each standard. In addition, operational definitions have been written for key terms used throughout the document. Importantly, these standards are separate and distinct from CCNE’s Standards for Accreditation of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs (amended October 2003)—the standards that are used to evaluate for accreditation the baccalaureate and graduate degree nursing programs in higher education institutions.
