Dean of the School of Nursing

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), a major public research university with a nationally acclaimed academic medical center, seeks an accomplished, dynamic academic nurse leader to serve as its new Dean of the School of Nursing (SON).  This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a high performing school of nursing, consistently ranked among the top 25 schools of nursing in NIH funding, and recognized for its achievements in teaching, research, and service, to its next level of excellence.  The new dean will play an integral role working within the SON and with leadership across the institution to help realize the ambitions laid out in VCU’s strategic plan, Quest for Distinction, embracing VCU’s vision as a premier urban, public research university focused on student success.

Reporting to the Vice President for Health Sciences, the new dean will lead and support development of a long-range strategic vision for the SON, which currently enrolls approximately 1,000 students in a range of baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral nursing programs.  S/He will play a leading role ensuring the school’s continuing success through a firm commitment and comprehensive approach to growing the school’s research portfolio, development and implementation of a strong faculty recruitment and retention strategy, preserving its strong clinical partnerships, and its unwavering dedication to ensuring the highest quality teaching, academic excellence, and service.

The new Dean will bring a history of outstanding research and scholarship, and demonstrated success working effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators to increase research and other sources of external funding, to recruit top notch talent, to promote close collaboration and interprofessional activity and the mentoring and development of nursing faculty. S/he will be a proven academic nurse leader with a record of success leading in a comparably complex university, ideally one including an academic medical center. The new dean will also bring outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, deep intellectual curiosity, and demonstrated success working effectively with senior leadership and a broad range of other internal and external constituents. The dean will bring a record of accomplishment appropriate for appointment as a tenured full professor.  The new dean will have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

VCU, one Virginia’s largest universities, is ranked among the top 100 universities in the country in sponsored research, enrolls more than 31,000 students in over 205 degree and certificate programs across its campuses - the downtown Monroe Park and MCV campuses in Richmond, campuses in Fairfax, Virginia for the schools of Medicine and Pharmacy, and one in Doha, Qatar for the School of the Arts.
