Dean for the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing
Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), a private, non-profit, non-sectarian medical and health science university located in the Watts-Willowbrook community of South Los Angeles, seeks a founding Dean for the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing. The successful candidate for this position will lead this new college to fulfill its mission to help train a new generation of highly skilled, culturally sensitive nurses and improve health care and health education among underserved, diverse populations for the County of Los Angeles and beyond.
The mission of Charles Drew University is to conduct education, research, and clinical services in the context of community engagement to train health professionals who promote wellness, provide care with excellence and compassion, and transform the health of underserved communities. It is the only higher education institute to be dually designated nationally as a Historically Black Graduate Institute (HBGI) and a charter member of the Hispanic Serving Health Professions Schools. In research dollars, CDU ranks in the top ten percent of more than 3400 institutions funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is in the top 50 private research universities, as rated by the Center for Measuring University Performance.
The Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing represents a key component of CDU’s vision; it will be the first school of nursing in the nation to focus on health inequities and the first comprehensive nursing school to be built in southern California in decades. The founding Dean will be expected to: develop a clear, cohesive vision and strategic plan for the CDU School of Nursing; recruit and develop an exceptional and diverse faculty; develop innovative and effective nursing education programs; foster collaborative partnerships across the university and with external organizations; and ensure the financial viability and success of this vital new institution.
The successful candidate for this position will be an inspiring, dedicated health-science administrator with the proven ability to lead a new school of nursing. A Ph.D. degree in nursing or related field is preferred, masters in nursing required.
