Biographies

Gordana Dermody, PhD, RN, CNL
Clinical Assistant Professor, Washington State University

  • Dr. Dermody has earned her Bachelor of Nursing in 2002 form Saint Anthony College of Nursing.  Her nursing experience includes hospice, long term care, occupational health, acute care medical oncology, stroke and cardiac care. She earned a Master’s degree in nursing with clinical leadership focus from Saint Xavier University in Chicago in 2011, and has been CNL certified since 2011. She then earned a PhD in nursing and a certificate in applied gerontology from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.  Dr. Dermody is a past Clinical Nurse Leader Association board member having held the elected position of Secretary (2013-2015). Other experiences include her work on CNLA bylaw revisions, and strategic planning in collaboration with AACN and the CNLA.  In addition, in collaboration with CNLA board members Dr. Dermody has worked on developing the process for CNLA chapter development.  Currently Dr. Dermody is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Washington State University. Dr. Dermody, is also involved in improving the quality of care at the international level. She has demonstrated past work as a CNL to improve hospital-based nursing care and health care environments in Uganda. For the past few years Dr. Dermody has worked on promoting the CNL as a potential new role in Japan that could bridge the implementation of evidence-past-practice. With her understanding about the barriers and facilitators to implement change, re-define nursing roles, and advance evidence-based practice principles that are unique to the international health system, Dr. Dermody has collaborated with CNL colleagues at the local and national level to develop sustainable international partnerships.

Christina Lupo, MSN, RN, CCRN, CNL
Clinical Nurse Leader, Texas Health Resources

  • Christina Lupo, MSN, RN, CCRN, CNL, was appointed to serve a three-year term on the Commission on Nurse Certification Board of Commissioners (CNCBOC).  Ms. Lupo’s professional career spans over 12 years and is a second career nurse.  Currently, she is a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) in a Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.

    Ms. Lupo was one of the first CNLs implemented in an ICU care setting within the system. During her tenure she has helped develop the system’s formal set of methods and responsibilities for all ICU CNLs, created a unit based infection prevention task force charged with reducing hospital-acquired infections, and helped facilitate a multi-disciplinary rounding process in the Neuro ICU which involved inviting patients and families to participate in daily rounds. She is currently leading a research study that measures the family’s perception of communication in the ICU after the implementation of patient-family centered rounds.

    In 2017, at Texas Health Resources, Ms. Lupo was nominated by her peers for the CNL excellence award and was an exemplar contributor for the industry textbook, Initiating and Sustaining the Clinical Nurse Leader Role. She served as the hospital CNL Committee Co-Chair and Chair from 2014-2016. She presented a poster on interdisciplinary rounding at the 2015 CNL Summit, and was a podium presenter at the 2016 CNL Summit where she discussed the implementation of the CNL role in the ICU.

    Ms. Lupo received a BS in supply chain management from Arizona State University and after a short career in the automobile industry; she made the decision to enter the nursing profession.  Subsequently, she attended the CNL program at the University of Alabama Birmingham and received her MSN and CNL certification in 2012. 

Elena Capella, EdD, MSN/MPA, CNL, RN, CPHQ, LNCC

  • Dr. Elena Capella has enjoyed a professional career in healthcare quality, compliance, and education. She obtained her Doctorate Degree in Education from the University of San Francisco in 2006. Her dissertation focused on the strategies physician administrators use to promote best practices. She also has a Master’s Degree in Nursing and Public Administration. Dr. Capella has published several articles and book chapters on topics including project management, a conceptual framework for the clinical nurse leader, managing change, multimedia statistics, integrating multimedia into graduate coursework, and ethical considerations for legal nurse consultants. She is frequently interviewed by the healthcare media press and has been quoted in the Huffington Post, HealthPayer Intelligence, Healthline, Journal of Advanced Practice Nursing, CBS, Scrubs Magazine, Healthcare Business and Technology, and Fierce Healthcare.

Bridget Drafahl, PhD, RN-BC, CNL
Assistant Professor, Grand View University

  • Bridget Drafahl is an Assistant Professor for Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. She received her PhD from Capella University with a focus on Nursing Education. Her dissertation studied the perceived effects burnout and disempowerment have on the creativity of associate degree nursing faculty. Bridget has received her certification as a Clinical Nurse Leader and certification in Professional Development. When she isn’t hard at work, Bridget enjoys bike riding and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She is currently working on publication of her research. Alma Holley, BSN, MPH, CNL, CCM

  • Alma Holley serves a CNL for the Washington DC Veteran Affairs Medical Center. She became a certified CNL in 2010 and this is a role she truly enjoys because the role requires all her nursing knowledge into practice. The road to accomplish many of her assignments is not present in most situations, so she must build it with her education and nursing experience. Alma believes as an experienced nurse it is her responsibility to give back to the new nurses. Over the past five years, she has served as a CNL Ambassador, presented at the CNL Summit and volunteered as a mentor/advisor for several CNL students. 

    With over 30 years of RN experience, Alma has held several positions in nursing. She has worked as a Nurse Manger, Nurse Educator, Case Manager, Director of Health Services, Dialysis Neonatal and Pediatric Nurse. Nursing is a dynamic profession and every day the nurse is challenge to keep up with the latest evidence based information. She published with a team Changing Behavior among Nurses to Track Indwelling Urinary Catheters in Hospitalized Patients (2013).

    Alma enlisted in the military in 1979 and has served on Active Duty, in the National Guard, Army Reserves and ROTC. Internationally, Alma also served on active duty in Iraq in 2008, where she was the head nurse for the Intermediate Ward of the 325th Combat Support Hospital. Her ward cared for over 700 patients. In 2009, she retired from the 2290th Combat Support Hospital at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC with over 30 years of service. Alma’s military experience makes her particularly sensitive to the healthcare needs of veterans.

    In addition to her extensive clinical experience, Alma also has an outstanding academic background that includes a Master Of Arts In Public Health Degree (MPH’91) from Tulane University New Orleans, LA and a Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Degree (BSN’ 83) from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, NC. In 2009, Ms. Holley completed a post master’s degree Clinical Nurse Leader Certificate Program at Oakland University. In 2013, Ms. Holley completed a Health Analytics Certificate with The University of Nebraska. 
    In the community, Alma has participated in the annual career day at her daughter’s school, where she encourages students to enter the nursing profession and represents one of her alma maters at a local College Fair to raise the interest of high school students in attending college. She is a Girl Scout Leader and very active in her church, the Sanctuary at Kingdom Square in Capital Heights, MD. She lives in Maryland with her wonderful, husband Joseph (Retired Military), their three lovely, daughters Holley, Joale and Jada and their dog, Autumn.

  • Deirdre Jackson is a master’s prepared nurse with over 30 years of experience in pediatric healthcare. During her career she has worked in a wide variety of roles including direct care, training and development, project management, clinical consultation and clinical practice. In her current role as Nursing Outreach Coordinator at The College of New Jersey, she teaches, advises and supports students in the off-campus RN-BSN program and off-campus MSN Clinical Nurse Leader track.

    Deirdre completed both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing of Children at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She is licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of New Jersey. In addition to being a certified Clinical Nurse Leader, she is a certified pediatric nurse (CPN) as well as a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN).

Meghan Lorbiecki, MSN, RN, CNL

  • Meghan Lorbiecki has been a certified Clinical Nurse Leader since August 2015. She has worked as a CNL in both Inpatient Behavioral Medicine and Med/Surg.  Ms. Lorbiecki earned her Master of Science degree in Nursing Summa Cum Laude from Columbia College of Nursing. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society and was a podium presenter at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) CNL Summit in January 2016.

Terrye Moore-Harper, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, CNL

  • Terrye Moore-Harper currently serves as Assistant Professor of the Master of Science in Nursing Program at Touro University. She has provided over 25 years of professional nursing services in clinical, administrative, research, and education areas. She is a former Captain in the Unites States Army Nurse Corps where she developed strong leadership and clinical skills. Ms. Moore-Harper earned her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Population Health Management from Duke University. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Valparaiso University and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Tuskegee University.

  • Danijela Pavlic was international social worker for 10 years prior to joining nursing profession. Her projects were mainly located in India and Central America. She  completed her MSN CNL degree and DNP in Healthcare system leadership at University of San Francisco. Her entire nursing career is devoted to advancement of CNL role, firstly by piloting a role in 2009 at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and for the past 7 years teaching at University of San Francisco SONHP in MSN CNL department. She teaches MSN and CNL role courses, focusing on CNL immersion experience. She is also a lead faculty for CNL immersion program in South Korea where students learn about efficiencies of care, integrated informatics systems, universal national healthcare insurance programs and healthcare review systems. Jessica L. Peck, DNP, RN, CNL, CPNP-PC, CNE

  • Dr. Peck is currently an Associate Professor of Nursing at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, Texas. She has been in an academic faculty role since 2005 and has taught BSN, MSN, and DNP students. She holds active credentials as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, a Certified Nurse Educator, and a Clinical Nurse Leader. Dr. Peck has been practicing as a pediatric APRN for 15 years in a primary care clinic and in a pediatric hospitalist group providing well newborn care. She is the secretary for the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and is the Texas State Representative for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Peck serves as a manuscript reviewer for several nursing publications and sits on the editorial board for a pediatric consumer magazine. She travels nationally to speak on the use of technology in nursing education and practice. Dr. Peck also works with national organizations to equip nurses to combat human trafficking.

Joanne F. Roy, PhD, RN-BC, CNL

  • Dr. Roy has over 37 years of experience as a nursing professional. Her experience encompasses both practice and academic settings. She currently holds the position of Director of Clinical Professional Development and Education within the Central Region of Hartford Healthcare, Hartford Connecticut. Dr. Roy earned her PhD in Nursing from The University of Rhode Island and her MSN from the University of Connecticut. She holds a specialty certification as a Nursing Professional Development Specialist as well as a Clinical Nurse Leader. Dr. Roy has a long standing commitment to advancing the CNL role and competencies within the evolving healthcare environment. She collaborated with partnering schools in the early design of the CNL curriculum and facilitated the development and realization of the clinical immersion practicum within her institutions. Dr. Roy continues to precept and mentor CNL students and graduates in projects that positively impact the quality, safety, experience and outcomes of patient care.

Laree J Schoolmeesters, PhD, RN, CNL
Associate Professor, Queens University of Charlotte

  • Dr. Laree Schoolmeesters (aka Dr. S) has been a nurse for 33 years with clinical experience in Pittsburgh, PA, in coronary, trauma, medical-intensive, surgical-intensive, medical surgical, and post-anesthesia care.

    As a nursing faculty member, Dr. S has 26 years of experience teaching clinical and didactic in nursing assistant; diploma; associate's degree; bachelor of science in nursing; master of science in nursing and staff development programs. Currently, she teaches in the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs at Queens University of Charlotte.

    Dr. S has a PhD in Nursing Research from Case Western Reserve University, OH, with research interests in complementary therapies, pain management, and cardiovascular health. She has Master of Science in Nursing with an area of specialization in Nursing Education from Duquesne University, PA. She has interests in incorporating technology in the classroom, writing exam questions, and fostering educational characteristics in the many graduate students she has mentored.

    Dr. S has published articles on resiliency an, music therapy> She has published book chapters on "Nurses Guide to Consumer Health", "Critical Care and Nursing Education", "Internet Resources for Nurses", "Techniques to Improve Database Searching" and "Internet for Nursing Research: A Guide to Strategies, Skills, and Resources."  Dr. S. has been a contributor for NCLEX review texts, has been a medical editor, and has been a reviewer for statistical, pathophysiology, and medical surgical nursing texts. She recently was awarded a mini-grant for applying technology in the classroom.

    Dr. S was named Professor of the Month by the Phi Mu gamma gamma chapter at Queens, was the past chair of the Institutional Review Board at Queens, and passed the accreditation exam to be a Clinical Nurse Leader in 2009.

Janice Wilcox, DNP, RN, CNL

  • Janice Wilcox DNP, RN, CNL has been a nurse for over 35 years in a variety of medical, surgical, and community settings and currently holds a joint position as Clinical Instructor of Practice at The Ohio State University College of Nursing, where she also serves as Director of the Clinical Nurse Leader Program, and a Nurse Educator for the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center James Comprehensive Cancer Center. She has taught undergraduate and graduate level nursing for the last 10 plus years and remains active educating CNL students and advocating for additional CNL positions within area clinical settings. Dr. Wilcox has performed research on nursing student stress reduction measures within the clinical setting and interprofessional simulation. She has spoken at national and international conferences on the significant learning opportunities involving communication effectiveness gained from interprofessional rounding simulations in order to improve patient outcomes.
