Nurse educators are aware of the increasing
value placed upon collaborating across professional disciplines.
Join colleagues to discuss the benefits and logistics of interprofessional
education and research initiatives that meet the needs and
capitalize upon strengths of multiple health professions.
Participants will explore several programs characterized by
noteworthy models, beneficial collaborations, and a history
of success. Topics are applicable to any nursing school with
the potential to share resources and partner with another
health care discipline in educational and/or research programs.
The conference is for deans, directors,
chairs, other academic leaders, and faculty interested in
the topics. Sessions include ample opportunity for reflection
and discussion. Participants will be encouraged to share perspectives,
ideas, concerns, and successful strategies. The conference

We're in a New Place. We're Not on the Edge of an
Old Place: Introduction to Interprofessional Education
The University of British Columbia has a long and distinguished
history in health care interprofessional education, working
to implement programs as long as forty years ago. Join a leader
in this educational movement to explore how one university
radically changed education for all health disciplines to
better reflect the health care industry in Canada. Reflect
on the increasing international interest in interprofessional
education, the importance of semantics, the criticality of
cultivating support systems, and the careful development of
program characteristics.

grant-funded program to educate nurse practitioner students,
medical residents, and pharmacy students in the care of chronically
ill individuals and populations. Students in the three disciplines

interventions for the population, facilitate each others'
learning, improve patient outcomes, and engage in systems
thinking under the supervision of interprofessional faculty.
Hear examples of successes, challenges, and practical advice.

The Great Lakes Learning Team Model: Interdisciplinary Education
for Geriatric Care
Learn about a grant-funded team learning model implemented
by Case Western Reserve University in 22 clinical practice
sites in two major U.S. cities. Medical residents, graduate
nursing students, and social work students engage in joint
workshops and not only collaboratively provide care to the
elderly, but also learn from the care they give and work toward
improving that care. The initiative has taught over 200 individuals
who are committed not only to mastery of geriatric care skills,
but also mastery of interpersonal skills and improving systems
of care. Discuss practical aspects of this and other interprofessional
experiences of the speakers.
Speakers: Shirley Moore, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor and Associate
Dean for Research, School of Nursing; and Peter J. Whitehouse
MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Neurology and Director Integrative
Studies, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University,

The University of Washington Center for Health Sciences Interprofessional
Education
Consider the importance of and evidence for interprofessional
education in general, and specific activities of a flagship
center for interprofessional education housed in a large school
of nursing. Learn more about multiple initiatives: placement
of classroom and clinical interprofessional education into
the required curricula of the schools six health care
disciplines; spotlighting interprofessional education in the
targeted area of patient safety; and implementation of an
interprofessional educational model for clinical preparation
of health sciences and related schools of the university.

Implementing Interprofessional Education and Research
Hear from colleagues who are active in interprofessional education
in a fast-paced abstract format followed by open discussion.
Abstracts will exemplify particularly innovative approaches,
expansive scope, and successful outcomes.
In group discussion, speakers and participants specifically
address pragmatic questions about interprofessional education
and research such as:
- How to resource it?
- How to work across discipline-specific
schedules?
- How to promote it?
- How to get faculty to do it?
- How to move from competition to collaboration?
- How to secure course credit within
the university system?
- How to implement in the absence of
other co-located health professions schools?
- How to include health care and non-health
care disciplines?
