Quality, Trust, and Other Issues of National Importance

Affecting Outcomes: Issues in Cultural Competence and
Multicultural Education
Nursing has long valued its sensitivity to various cultures
and has been committed to attracting professionals that
represent people for whom we care. Let's examine the evidence
on the relationship between increased diversity in the
health professions and improved patient outcomes. How
do we increase the number of diverse students in our educational
programs and help them be successful? How might we work
toward standards for how to include cultural competence
in our programs? Consider approaches that work.
Speaker: Dula Pacquaio, EdD, Associate Professor and
Director, Stanley Bergen Center for Multicultural Education,
Research and Practice, School of Nursing, University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, NJ

A View of Higher Education
Regardless of size or mission, all institutions of higher
education struggle with similar issues.
Beyond the similarities, differences exist about which
all nurse educators should be aware. Learn more about
the issues and priorities for higher education from the
perspective of two national higher education organizations
representing different constituencies.
Speakers: Richard Ekman, PhD, President, Council of
Independent Colleges, Washington, DC; Peter Magrath, PhD,
Senior Presidential Advisor, The College Board and President
Emeritus, National Association Of State Universities And
Land-Grant Colleges, Washington, DC
