The New Master’s Essentials Document
A new AACN Task Force has been appointed to prepare The Essentials of Master’s Education for Advanced Generalist Nursing Practice, distinct from The Essentials of Master's Education for Advanced Practice Nursing. The task force will develop a document that delineates the essential professional nursing competencies that should be acquired upon graduation from a master's program for advanced generalist nursing. The new Master's Essentials also will address articulation of the entry-level generalist nurse to advanced generalist education and the advanced generalist to doctoral education, either the DNP or the PhD. Bring your breakfast and discuss the priorities for this important work, and offer your input to the task force.
Speaker: Joanne Warner, DNS, RN, Dean and Professor, School of Nursing, University of Portland, Portland, OR and Chair, Task Force on The Essentials of Master’s Education for
Advanced Generalist Nursing Practice, joined by other members of the Task Force.

-
Debriefing in Simulation: An Essential Step
Much attention has been given to the expensive equipment and infrastructure of using clinical simulation, but one essential component – debriefing - is absolutely free, and vital to experiential learning and critical thinking. The structured and supported debriefing methodology developed by other health organizations has been adapted for use in nursing scenarios. Participate in didactic and practice sessions that incorporate use of this innovative technique, preparing you to use it with your students.
Speakers: Helen K. Burns PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical Education, and John M. O’Donnell, MSN, RN, CRNA, Director, Nurse Anesthesia Program, School of Nursing, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA
-
FacilitatingCCNE Accreditation of Master’s Programs
Although many specialty programs at the master’s level are changing to the DNP level, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) will continue to accredit all master's tracks including education, administration, and advanced practice nursing, in addition to the CNL. Those who anticipate initial or reaccreditation by CCNE will benefit from the opportunity to ask questions about accreditation of these programs and the implementation of the newly revised CCNE accreditation standards.
Speakers: Representatives from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Washington, DC
-
Teaching Genetics and Genomics
Health care is benefiting from unprecedented progress through the ongoing work clarifying the genetic/genomic basis of health, illness, disease risk, and treatment response. This session provides pragmatic guidance for implementing essential competencies and curricular guidelines for genetics and genomics, including competency outcome indicators; model nursing curricula that integrate genetics and genomics into existing curricula; and an introduction to the Genetics/Genomics Tool Kit for Faculty.
Speakers: Jean F. Jenkins, PhD, RN, FAAN, Senior Clinical Advisor, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD and Kathleen A. Calzone, MSN, RN, APNG, FAAN, Senior Nurse Specialist (Research), National Cancer Institute, Center for Cancer Research, Genetics Branch, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD

Understanding Implications of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation
The APRN Consensus Work Group, representing over 20 nursing organizations including
AACN, recently completed their work resulting in agreement concerning advanced practice education, licensure, certification, and accreditation. Review the consensus process and model, and consider implications for curriculum change and action strategies to make your advanced practice program fully successful and graduates eligible to sit for licensure.
Speakers: Joan M. Stanley, PhD, RN, CRNP, FAAN, Senior Director of Education Policy, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Washington, DC and AACN representative to the Consensus Joint Dialogue Group; and Marcia Blix Hobbs, DSN, RN, Chair, Department of Nursing, Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, MO and National Council of State Boards of Nursing APRN representative to the Consensus Joint Dialogue Group

Using Clinical Preceptors at Distant Sites
Finding sufficient clinical preceptors for advanced practice students is always a challenge in master’s nursing education, but the use of remote clinical sites makes this even more difficult. Gain ideas about identifying and utilizing the best possible clinical preceptors at distant sites. Consider innovative approaches that maximize clinical experiences when direct faculty supervision is not possible. Discuss relevant issues including the use of technology, preceptor training, and solutions to barriers to clinical education including HIPAA and CMS guidelines.
Speaker: Julie A. Marfell, DNP, RN, BC, FNP, Chairperson, Department of Family Nursing,
Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, Hyden, KY
