Opening Program Session: The Future of Nursing – Been There, Done That?  Not This Time!
The 2010 landmark Institute of Medicine (IOM) report regarding the future of nursing calls for broad changes in nursing practice and education. This session will cover the IOM recommendations and leadership strategies to deal with increased accountability and decreased certainty.

Program Session: Developing an Infrastructure to Support Research
Research underpins graduate education and advances the science of health promotion and disease prevention. In this session, The University of Texas at Austin’s business structure will be presented as a successful model for Schools of Nursing to promote research excellence.

Program Session: The Clinical Continuum
The clinical mission in a school of nursing includes a continuum of clinical activity, from students’ clinical learning to direct patient care by faculty.  This session will look at trends in clinical education, fostering community partnerships, and developing a sound faculty practice.

Group Dinner - Stubb’s Bar-B-Q
Centrally located in Austin’s popular downtown entertainment district, Stubb’s Bar-B-Q is a landmark attraction housed in a 19th-century structure that has served as a homestead, a grocery, a used furniture store, a beer bar and a tavern called the One Knite, still remembered by longtime Austinites. The building has been a live music venue for almost 40 years with Stubb’s indoor stage, huge backyard and amphitheater featuring some of the greatest names in music.

Program Session: How Lean and Other Improvement Methods Can Assist in Organizational Financial Objectives
The basic concepts of lean thinking will be introduced and sources of waste will be identified including how waste can be mitigated.  These concepts have real application in academia/education and the speaker will close with a review of potential methods that could be utilized to accelerate lean concept adoption in the academic environment.
