For the first time since 1997, the National Task Force on Quality Nurse Practitioner Education (NTF) has revised and updated the landmark document Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs. These criteria represent the collective work of eleven organizations dedicated to maintaining the quality of nurse practitioner education and offers an important resource for those involved in the preparation, licensing, and credentialing of nurse practitioners. In combination with accreditation standards for graduate programs and for specialty areas, the criteria provide a basis for evaluating the quality of nurse practitioner programs. The federal Division of Nursing, a branch of the Health Resources and Services Administration, has just published a new set of primary care competencies for nurse practitioners (NP) in five practice areas. This publication, which you can download above, is the result of the collaborative work of the AACN and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. Competencies were identified by a national panel including organizations that represent the five NP specialties, as well as credentialing and certifying agencies. A validation panel composed of leaders from nursing practice, education and accreditation organizations confirmed the relevance of the national panel’s work. Bound copies of these competencies will be available in the near future. Read the press release here.
