ExCEL in SOCIAL WORK: EXCELLENCE IN CANCER EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP

The ExCEL in Social Work pre-conference trainings address critical components of quality psychosocial-spiritual support. These innovative trainings are offered free of cost (for competitively selected applicants) and accepted applicants are eligible for that night’s hotel stay, extensive materials, CE’s, and meals associated with the training. ExCEL is strategically scheduled immediately preceding the annual conferences (2012) for the AOSW and APOSW to potentially minimize time away from work and out-of-pocket travel costs.

City of Hope Pain and Palliative Care Resource Center (PRC)
This resource includes numerous articles, books, list of videos, quality improvement initiatives, clinical and research tools addressing quality of life, pain, psychosocial assessment, medical staff knowledge and attitudes, brief pain surveys, palliative care and needs assessments from various sources.
The Institute for Palliative Medicine (IPM) focuses on the palliative care education and research for healthcare professionals. IPM provides training to over 2,000 healthcare professionals annually, conducts research studies to improve care for patients with advanced illnesses and also has an online store for palliative care educational products.
PAL-MED CONNECT® is a grant-funded palliative medicine resource hotline. The hotline is open to healthcare professionals to call in whenever they have any questions regarding palliative care. PAL-MED CONNECT® receives calls from physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists who have questions about pain and symptom management, opioid conversion, difficult family conversations, etc.
The IPAL-ICU Project
The IPAL-ICU Project provides essential tools and resources to support the improvement of palliative care for all ICU patients and their families. IPAL-ICU is committed to assisting providers across disciplines to deliver outstanding palliative care as an integral component of comprehensive critical care, from the time of ICU admission, regardless of prognosis. The IPAL-ICU Project is supported by the Center to Advance Palliative Care and the National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Aging.
Launched on November 10, 2011: IPAL-EM: IPAL-EM (Improving Palliative Care in Emergency Medicine) is a new, national initiative to improve and integrate palliative care in emergency medicine. IPAL-EM is the only initiative of its kind. Developed by an interdisciplinary team of experts in emergency medicine and palliative care, IPAL-EM will be the central U.S. hub for shared expertise, evidence, tools and resources. The goal is to promote a paradigm shift in the way that patients, and their families, are cared for in the emergency department. IPAL-EM is part of The IPAL Project and is supported by the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) and the Olive Branch Foundation. All resources are free. The real-life intimate case studies serve as conversation starters to assist health care professionals and students to sensitively explore issues of childhood and young adult cancer. The seven modules include: Nurse-Patient-Family Relationships, Pediatric End-Of-Life Case Studies, Siblings Stories, Disparities, Spirituality and Childhood Cancer, Childhood Cancer and School Issues and Childhood Cancer Survivorship Stories.
