Erin Freyer

"The Student Policy Summit helped give me the tools and confidence to pursue future political action at the state and national levels.  It was so amazing to be able to talk directly to those representing my state in DC, and to get to see firsthand how the political process works.  The friends I made, speakers I heard, and experiences I had all came together to make my time at the Summit inspiring and empowering."

“The Student Policy Summit was nothing less than inspiring. As an advocate, you need to ask for opportunity, funding, and other resources and part of the summit focused on learning how to make that pitch. I learned how advocacy works, how to maximize my 15 minutes with an elected official or aide, and that even the voice of a student and nurse can be heard in Washington! Translating into practice, I will not shy at the opportunity to lobby for my education or profession. Additionally, I have sought to bring home what I learned at the summit by developing an annual, multi-disciplinary Student Health Policy Workshop for our campus, including medical, pharmacy, dental, doctoral research and nursing students. I have also answered the call to leadership at the student level by serving on the National Student Nurses' Association Resolutions Committee for the last two years. Our campus, and the Oregon Student Nurses' Association, are both looking to continue the trend by sending students annually to the AACN Student Policy Summit!"
