Deadline Approaching for the NINR 2014 Summer Genetics Institute
 
The application period for the National Institute of Nursing Research’s (NINR) Summer Genetics Institute (SGI) will close on Monday, March 1, 2014 at 5:00 pm (ET).

SGI will take place from June 2–June 27, 2014, on the Bethesda, MD, campus of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Intended for graduate students, faculty, or clinicians, the SGI provides participants with a foundation in molecular genetics appropriate for use in research and clinical practice. The intensive 4-week, 8-credit hour graduate level program includes both classroom and laboratory components.

Get Vaccinated: Protect Your Patients, Students, and Yourself
 
The flu season continues into February, as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week reports that flu activity remains elevated overall across the nation. These severe flu outcomes are a reminder that flu can be a very serious disease for anyone, including young, previously healthy adults. Being vaccinated is the best prevention from getting and spreading the flu. Unfortunately, younger adults, especially those who are otherwise healthy, are less likely to be vaccinated. As a leader in the nursing profession, is it vital that you protect your patients and students by protecting yourself – and encourage them to the do the same. If you haven’t been vaccinated, take action today.

Launch of AACN's New Online Member Service System
AACN has launched a new online member services system, called My AACN. This new system streamlines each part of the membership experience and provides an array of online services that can be accessed on demand by deans, faculty, staff, and students from affiliated schools.
 
On Tuesday, February, 18, 2014, faculty members received an email from Beth Aronson, AACN's Membership Director, containing a unique login and password with easy instructions on how to login to the new system.
 
Vist AACN’s main website (www.aacn.nche.edu) and login with your login and password to access the new system (upper right corner of AACN's homepage). Below are some features of My AACN:
  • Personalize your member profile and communication preferences
  • Register for multiple conferences and Webinars
  • Gain instant access to AACN’s online Collaboration Community and enhanced networking options

Fellows Chosen for AACN's Faculty Policy Intensive
AACN will hold its second annual Faculty Policy Intensive on March 24-27, 2014 in Washington, DC. This four-day immersion program is designed for faculty at AACN member schools who are interested in actively pursuing a role in healthcare and nursing policy. The 2014 cohort was chosen from a highly competitive pool of more than 30 applications. In March, these eight faculty members will have the opportunity to enhance their existing knowledge of policy and advocacy through sessions that will strengthen their understanding of the legislative process and the dynamic relationships between federal departments and agencies, national nursing organizations, and the individual advocate.

CCNE Call for Nominations for Board of Commissioners and Nominating Committee Members
The deadline for submitting nominations for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) Board of Commissioners and Nominating Committee is March 14, 2014. The following positions on the 13-member Board are open: one representative of chief nurse administrators (e.g., deans or equivalent) of CCNE-accredited nursing programs, one representative of faculty, one representative who is actively engaged, as his or her primary professional role, in the practice of nursing, one representative of professional consumers, and one representative of public consumers. Each Board position is for a three-year term of service. The Commission is also seeking nominations for candidates to serve as members on its Nominating Committee. Four positions are available, and the members are eligible to serve a one-year term. Nominations must be received by March 14, 2014. Schwartz Center and Gold Foundation Announce Request for Abstracts
The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation are pleased to announce a Request for Abstracts (RFA) for an upcoming conference, Advancing Compassionate, Patient- and Family-Centered Care through Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice. The conference will be held October 30 - November 1, 2014 in Atlanta with support from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.

A select group of applicants will be invited to attend the conference and to present posters on exemplary initiatives that foster and provide compassionate care in clinical settings through interprofessional education and collaborative practice.

Below are links to the RFA instructions. The deadline for submission of a 300-word application is May 30, 2014. Funding for travel and overnight accommodations will be provided to those selected to present posters and attend the conference.

Important New Resource for Schools of Nursing from NCSBN
The AACN Board of Directors formally approached the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) about creating a real-time repository of information on state regulations impacting the oversight and approval of distance-based nursing programs. This response was made on behalf of member schools seeking current information about each state’s specific requirements. Given the strong relationship between the NCSBN and the individual boards of nursing, the AACN Board believed that NCSBN was in the best position to develop such a repository.

AACN is pleased to report that the NCSBN is moving ahead with creating this new resource. Here is the formal announcement by the Chief Executive Officer of NCSBN, Kathy Apple:

“NCSBN is happy to announce that we will develop a compendium for nursing programs, which will list any special requirements that BONs may have related to distance education programs that have students or programs in their states. This list will not include other state requirements (such as those from the Board of Higher Education) that may exist. However, those can usually be found elsewhere, such as on the SHEEO.org web site.
 
This BON list of distance education requirements will be incorporated into a web page that NCSBN is creating and will be housed under the Education link on our web site. The user will be able to click the state to find any specific requirements that state has so that educators can comply with BON distance education rules and regulations. This web page will also include other resources for educators and BONs about the regulation of distance education programs. The anticipated roll-out date of this web page is May 1, 2014.”

CNC Announcements

CNL Certification Program Receives National Accreditation

The CNL Certification Program has received national accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The program was granted the maximum five-year accreditation from NCCA following demonstration of compliance to national standards. CNC demonstrated that the program offers a valid and reliable process for the development, implementation, assessment, maintenance, and governance required for certification. Register for the Next CNL Certification Exam Testing Period


March 21, 2014 is the deadline to register for the Spring testing period (April 27-May 24, 2014) of the CNL Certification Exam. March 21 is also the deadline for CNL education programs to register as exam sites.

2014 ELNEC National Train-the-Trainer Courses
In 2014, there will be 12 national End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) train-the-trainer courses in eight cities across the US. ELNEC courses are provided for various specialties and interest groups. For example, specific curricula are available for those who:
  • Teach in a DNP program and/or participate in DNP clinical practice (National Cancer Institute provided funding for this course)
  • Lead or provide care for the seriously ill in an advanced practice role
  • Provide care to seriously ill children, including perinatal and neonatal
  • Manage and provide care for those practicing in critical care settings, acute care, hospice, long-term care/skilled nursing facilities/nursing homes

AACN launched NursingCAS in 2010 to help direct prospective students to open seats in nursing programs and to collect data on nursing applicant and admissions trends.
