AACN was pleased to honor John W. Rowe, MD, Professor, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, with the 2013 McGovern Award for his contributions to healthcare and nursing. Dr. Rowe’s distinguished career includes serving as Chairman and CEO of the health insurance company Aetna, Inc. and President and CEO of Mount Sinai NYU Health, one of the nation’s largest academic healthcare organizations. A member of the IOM’s expert panel that produced the Future of Nursing report, he is one of the nation’s leading physician advocates for expanding nursing’s role in providing primary care. Gold Foundation Posts RFP for Grants to Support Mentoring Programs
 
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is soliciting proposals for mentoring interventions that are specifically designed to help physicians and nurses in training and early practice to be more humanistic in their patient care. The purpose of the RFP is to fund mentoring programs that result in enhanced capacity of healthcare providers to deliver care that is as humanistic and compassionate as it is scientifically and technically sophisticated. AACN, Jonas Center & Khan Academy Announce Competition to Develop Educational Resources
On November 4, 2013, the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence (JCNE), Khan Academy, and AACN announced competition rules for nursing students and other healthcare professionals to create video tutorials and exercises related to content covered in the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN®).

The competition is part of a new initiative to transform how professional health education is delivered to providers across disciplines around the globe. Submissions will be accepted via the Khan Academy web site until a core set of winners are found or by January 17, 2014. The first tutorials are expected to be available in the spring of 2014 through the Khan Academy’sonline learning website.
 
Winners will receive a one-week trip (March 2-9, 2014) to get face-to-face training and support from Khan Academy to help develop an open access, free resource for students and faculty in the health professions. Winners may then be invited to become Khan Academy content creators, and to work on developing the next generation of health content – especially helpful for nursing students preparing to take the NCLEX-RN.

New Careers in Nursing (NCIN) Call for Applications
 

The seventh Call for Proposals (CFP) was issued for the New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program. Schools of Nursing (SON) may apply directly to NCIN for a grant ranging from $50,000 to $300,000. These grants are then disbursed as $10,000 scholarships that can be awarded to students entering an accelerated nursing degree program. To view the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s announcement click here. Here you also have the opportunity to preview the complete application before beginning the application process.

Applications for this solicitation must be submitted via the RWJF online system. Visit http://www.rwjf.org/cfp/ncin7 and use the Apply Online link for this solicitation. If you have not already done so, you will be required to register at http://my.rwjf.org/login.do before you begin the application process.
 
The deadline for receipt of the online application, including supporting materials, is January 9, 2014, at 3:00 pm (ET).

AACN Board Endorses Public Health Nursing Competency Guidelines
At its Board meeting on October 25, the AACN Board of Directors endorsed the Recommended Baccalaureate Competencies and Curricular Guidelines for Public Health Nursing, which was prepared by an expert panel convened as part of AACN’s CDC Academic Partnership Cooperative agreement. The goal of this curricular guide is to highlight population health as a critical component in improving the country’s health, emphasize nursing’s role in addressing this priority, and provide strategies for faculty to integrate enhance population health content and experiences in the curriculum. This document was designed to be used in tandem with the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2011) and features suggested content and teaching strategies for each Essential. QSEN Graduate Faculty Development Workshop in Naples, FL
 
AACN is pleased to announce that registration is now underway for the January 29, 2014 Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Graduate Faculty Development Workshop in Naples, FL.
 
As a pre-conference for the AACN Doctoral Education Conference, this workshop will give nursing faculty and hospital educators the skills and resources needed to teach quality and safety competencies in master’s and doctoral level nursing courses. Graduate faculty and their practice partners are invited to apply.

Registration is free to the first 100 faculty who register for the workshop. Applications must be completed online. The application is available at www.aacn.nche.edu/qsen/workshop-application. Contact hours will be awarded to all attendees who complete the entire one-day QSEN pre-conference workshop.

Register Now for the 2014 CNL Summit and CNL Research Symposium
The 2014 Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Summit will be held January 16-18, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County near Disneyland Resort in Garden Grove, CA. The CNL Summit provides a national forum for all healthcare and academic audiences currently implementing or interested in exploring CNL education and practice. Conference topics include the impact and value of the CNL role in achieving the Triple Aim: improved cost, quality, and service outcomes; new models of care in today’s era of healthcare reform and the CNL role, particularly related to care coordination, lateral integration and transitions of care; and multi-professional practice and the CNL role in leading and building teams.
 
The 2014 CNL Research Symposium, a pre-conference workshop held in conjunction with the AACN’s CNL Summit, will be held on January 16, 2014 from 8:00 am-12:30 pm at the Hyatt Regency Orange County. Hosted by the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC) and sponsored by the Clinical Nurse Leader Association (CNLA), the theme is Using Today’s Data to Improve Tomorrow. The target audience includes educators, practicing CNLs, students, healthcare administrators, nurse executives, and physicians among others. Early registration is $110; after January 3, 2014, the registration is $139. Separate registration from the CNL Summit is required.

Apply Today for AACN's 2014 Faculty Policy Intensive
 
AACN is now accepting applications for the second annual Faculty Policy Intensive to be held March 24-27, 2014 in Washington, DC. This fully-funded, four-day immersion program is designed for faculty of AACN member schools who are interested in actively pursuing a role in healthcare and nursing policy. The Faculty Policy Intensive offers participants the opportunity to enhance existing knowledge of policy and advocacy through sessions that will strengthen understanding of the legislative process and the dynamic relationships between federal departments and agencies, national nursing organizations, and the individual advocate. Up to eight faculty members will be accepted through the application process. DNP Faculty: December 2 Deadline Approaching to Apply for NCI Grant-Funded Course
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded grant funding to the City of Hope Medical Center, in partnership with AACN, to prepare Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) faculty to integrate palliative care content into DNP program curricula. This project, titled Integrating Palliative Oncology Care into Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Education and Clinical Practice, will give nursing faculty the tools and resources needed to educate DNP graduates on how to provide compassionate and evidence-based palliative care to the 1.6 million Americans diagnosed with cancer this year, plus the 13.7 million Americans who are living with a history of cancer. Using the grant funding, free registration, plus up to $350 in hotel lodging expenses will be offered to nursing faculty interested in attending this two-day train-the-trainer course. Faculty will be chosen competitively based on their ability to disseminate the curriculum content to other faculty, students, and clinical partners. The first of four national train-the-trainer courses will be held February 27-28, 2014 in Glendale, CA. The second national course will be held June 26-27, 2014 in Washington, DC. Join your colleagues at an upcoming event to learn more about how to leverage NursingCAS to effectively manage your admissions process. NursingCAS is the online, centralized application service for nursing schools that provides an online application for students and web-based admissions management software for schools called WebAdMIT. These free events and Webinars are open to deans, admissions professionals, IT staff, faculty, nursing school recruiters, advisors, and other decision-makers involved in the admissions process. There is no cost to schools to participate in NursingCAS (software, training, and support are free); applicants do pay a nominal fee. Participation is open to all accredited programs at the diploma, associate, baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels. Schools can join at anytime and decide which programs to post on NursingCAS, and we will assist you with implementation. NursingCAS can be used as an additional application method and does not need to replace an application your school already has in place. For more information on joining, click here.
