Marilyn Tavenner First Nurse Confirmed as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
On May 15, 2013, the Senate confirmed by a vote of 91-7 the appointment of Marilyn Tavenner, MHA, RN, as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Prior to her confirmation, Ms. Tavenner had served as the agency’s Acting Administrator since 2011. The Senate’s widespread support of Ms. Tavenner as the first nurse to hold this highly influential position marks a victory for the nursing profession and for the millions of patients who receive CMS services. Upon announcing her appointment, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius stated, “Marilyn brings with her a breadth of experience and expertise from virtually all angles of health care policy and delivery, having served as a hospital CEO, a state health official, and a registered nurse.”
AACN applauds Ms. Tavenner on her successful appointment and is confident that CMS will continue to strive for the delivery of accessible, high-quality care under her leadership. AACN recently sent a letter congratulating the Administrator on her confirmation.
