New AACN Data Show the Impact of the Economy on the Nurse Faculty Shortage New data collected by AACN show that the downturn in the economy may be impacting the nurse faculty shortage by lowering the national vacancy rate. Based on data received from 554 schools of nursing in the U.S. with baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs (70.2% response rate), the nurse faculty vacancy rate in 2009 was 6.6%, down from 7.6% in 2008. Many schools point to changes in faculty retirement patterns and hiring freezes at academic institutions as reasons for this presumably short-term easing of the shortage.

Enrollment Growth in U.S. Nursing Colleges and Universities Hits an 8-Year Low AACN today released preliminary survey data showing that enrollment in entry-level baccalaureate nursing programs increased by only 2.0 percent from 2007 to 2008. Though this marks the eighth consecutive year of enrollment growth, the annual increase in student capacity in four-year nursing programs has declined sharply since 2003 when enrollment was up by 16.6 percent. Adding to this sobering news is the fact that enrollment growth in master’s nursing programs has also decreased, and the number of students entering research-focused doctorates appears to be flat based on early reporting.

Enrollment Growth Slows at U.S. Nursing Colleges and Universities in 2007 Despite Calls for More Registered Nurses AACN today released preliminary survey data that show that enrollment in entry-level baccalaureate nursing programs increased by 4.98 percent from 2006 to 2007. Though this marks the seventh consecutive year of enrollment growth, the rate at which nursing schools have been able to increase student capacity has declined sharply since 2003 when enrollment was up by 16.6 percent. While this increase represents a positive trend, AACN is concerned that more than 30,000 qualified applicants were turned away from baccalaureate nursing programs last year due primarily to an intensifying shortage of nurse faculty.

AACN Concerned that Recommendations in the President's FY 2008 Budget Request Would Heighten the Nation's Nursing Shortage Today, AACN expressed its concern that proposed cuts to nursing education programs contained in President Bush's FY 2008 budget request would reverse the progress made by federal legislators to address the nation's nursing shortage. The President has requested a 30% reduction in funding for Nursing Workforce Development Programs (Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act), which includes the elimination of Advanced Education Nursing Programs. In addition to cuts to nursing education, the President's budget is calling for a steep decrease in funding for Health Professions Education Programs (Title VII) which would endanger the nation's ability to provide necessary health care services, especially to vulnerable populations.

AACN Commends Efforts by Congress to Provide New Funding to Address the Nurse Faculty Shortage AACN today announced its support for new federal legislation that would effectively address the nation’s serious and growing shortage of nurse educators. Introduced late last week by Representatives Nita Lowey (D-NY), Peter King (R-NY), and Lois Capps (D-CA), the Nurse Education, Expansion and Development (NEED) Act (H.R. 3569) would provide funding to nursing schools to overcome obstacles to increasing student capacity. According to AACN’s latest survey, the primary reason nursing schools are unable to enroll more students and better address the nursing shortage is the insufficient supply of qualified nursing faculty.

New Data Confirms Shortage of Nursing School Faculty Hinders Efforts to Address the Nation's Nursing Shortage According to new survey data released today by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), enrollments in entry-level baccalaureate programs in nursing increased by 14.1 percent in fall 2004 over the previous year. This enrollment increase is even greater than AACN's preliminary data released on December 15, 2004 which showed a 10.6 percent increase. Despite this significant gain, more than 32,000 qualified applications were turned away from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs last year, including almost 3,000 students who could potentially fill faculty roles.

AACN Pleased that Funding for Nursing Education is Preserved in the President’s FY 2006 Budget Request Today, AACN announced its support for the $150 million in funding for nursing education included in President Bush’s FY 2006 budget proposal. Though the president called for the elimination of other programs that prepare health professionals, funding for nursing was requested at the current level for Nursing Workforce Development programs (Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act). AACN is concerned, however, that the elimination of the other health professions education programs (Title VII) will severely limit access to health care for underserved populations.

Enrollment Increases at U.S. Nursing Schools Are Moderating While Thousands of Qualified Students Are Turned Away AACN announced today that enrollment in entry-level baccalaureate programs in nursing increased by 10.6 percent in 2004 over the previous year. Though this increase is welcome, nursing colleges and universities denied 26,340 qualified applications this year due primarily to a shortage of nurse educators. With the government projecting a shortfall of 800,000 nurses by the year 2020, AACN is concerned that too few nurses are entering the workforce given the growing demand for nursing care.
