AACN’s Celebrated Faculty Webinar Series Returns with a
Stimulating Mix of Free Enrichment Opportunities for Nurse Educators

Upcoming Webinars Focus on Best Teaching Practices, Simulation, Interprofessional Education, Executive Leadership, Nursing Research, Geriatric Nursing, and the Clinical Nurse Leader

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 19, 2011 – The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is pleased to announce that two dozen free Webinars will be offered this fall for nurse faculty teaching in baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs. Building on the success of last year’s series, these professional enrichment events will address areas of great interest to nurse educators, including best teaching practices, interprofessional education, nursing research roles, clinical simulation, the Clinical Nurse Leader role, geriatric nursing education, and adapting graduate program curriculum.

“Preparing a robust healthcare workforce will not be possible without expert nurse educators who are able to thrive in light of changing healthcare and higher education expectations,” said AACN President Kathleen Potempa. “AACN is committed to working with a broad array of subject matter experts and opinion leaders to provide professional development opportunities tailored to the unique interests of faculty teaching in baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs.”

Since November 2009, AACN has offered a continuous series of faculty Webinars, which has attracted strong interest from nurse educators at all levels. To date, more than 40 Webinars have been presented by noted experts on topics ranging from evidence-based practice, test development, cultivating clinical preceptors, integrating the new Master’s Essentials in the curriculum, and implementing a Doctor of Nursing Practice program. Since the Webinar series was launched, more than 13,000 registrations have been received from faculty at more than 550 nursing schools nationwide. Currently, more than 11,000 nurse educators are listed in AACN’s faculty roster and are able to access these free faculty development programs.

Simulation Standards for Best Practice
Monday, September 26, 2011, 2:00–3:00 pm EST

Sponsored by Elsevier, the publisher of the Journal of Professional Nursing and the world’s leading provider of science and health information, this timely Webinar marks the first collaborative effort between AACN and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL). At this event, two INACSL Board members will provide an overview of the standards that nursing programs should use when integrating simulation into the clinical training of registered nurses. These standards were developed over a two-year period with input provided by nursing simulation leaders, the INACSL membership, and expert peer reviewers from healthcare simulation. These standards can be utilized to provide a framework for your nursing program, guide research projects, and attract potential donors. Integrating Interprofessional Competencies into the Curriculum
Thursday, October 6, 3:30-5:00 pm EST 

Released earlier this year, The Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice was sponsored by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative and represents the collective thinking of six healthcare professions. With the goal of fostering high-quality, patient-centered care, these competencies provide guidance to faculty looking to move beyond profession-specific education by engaging students in interactive interprofessional learning. Join AACN President-Elect Jane Kirschling to explore the practical aspects for integrating the new core competencies into nursing curricula. Dr. Kirschling will be joined by colleagues from medicine and pharmacy who will share their experiences with the cross-disciplinary innovations taking place at their institutions. Other highlights of the AACN faculty Webinar series include:

  • A three-part series exclusively for nursing school deans, titled Dean 101: Transitioning to the Role of the Chief Academic Officer for Nursing, with sessions on the qualities and skills of a successful dean, the legal aspects of academic nursing, and cultivating student relations.

  • Clinical Teaching and Evaluation with distinguished nurse educator Dr. Marilyn Oermann from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

  • A special focus on nursing science, including a two-part series on mastering the role of Principal Investigator as well as standout sessions on Building the Science for Nursing Education and Building Support for a Faculty Research Agenda.

  • A four-part series on the Clinical Nurse Leader, cosponsored with the Commission on Nurse Certification, on the evolving CNL role and how to sustain academic-service partnerships, make the business case for the CNL role, and assess CNL outcomes.

  • A three-part series on geriatric nursing education focused on resources and outcomes from AACN’s Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium.

  • A four-part series for faculty focused on Transitioning to Adult-Gerontology APRN Education, including a session on infusing geropsychiatric content in nursing curricula.
