Part II: Equipping the Civilian Health Workforce to Meet the Behavioral/Mental Health Needs of Veterans, Services Members and their Families
DATE: MAY 7, 2012
TIME: 2:00 - 3:30 PM (ET)
Webinar Overview
AACN is proud to support the Joining Forces campaign. Joining Forces is a comprehensive national campaign launched by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to mobilize all sectors of society to give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they deserve. This series of free Webinars will showcase innovative approaches to preparing students and nurses to care for service members and veterans.
This webinar will discuss a current initiative of the nation’s AHECs (Area Health Education Centers) to educate civilian health professionals about deployment-related mental and behavioral health issues of veterans, service members and their families. This AHEC initiative is bringing continuing education programs to nurses and other clinicians in local communities that will impact both the quality of services and access to care for veterans living in those communities.
This webinar will include a discussion of post-deployment behavioral and mental health issues commonly faced by our service men and women, a “Boots on the Ground” first person account of the combat/military experience, specific information about the AHEC project, a case study of similar trainings held in Florida and a discussion of how AHECs and Schools of Nursing can work together on this and future activities.
This AHEC Veterans Mental Health Project is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Contract No. HHSH250200900063C/0004 to the National AHEC Organization (NAO).
