As the nation works to implement the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the current healthcare delivery system will undergo many complex changes. Dr. Cohen will address the expansion of insurance coverage with the launch of the new Health Insurance Marketplace on Oct 1st and will take questions on these timely topics. Dr. Whelan will be discussing the impact of the ACA on nursing practice and will offer some guidance for nurses as to how best to prepare for the transition. Members of the organizations belonging to the Nursing Community are highly encouraged to register.
Mandy Cohen, MD, MPH
Dr. Mandy Cohen is an internist and Senior Advisor to the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In this role, Dr. Cohen works on the operational implementation of the Affordable Care Act helping to coordinate outreach and enrollment work for the new Health Insurance Marketplaces. Prior to this role, Dr. Cohen was the Director of Stakeholder Engagement for the CMS Innovation Center. In this role she worked with the Innovation Center’s many stakeholders to identify and test new payment and care delivery models. Dr. Cohen received her medical degree from Yale University, a Masters in Public Health from Harvard and trained in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Ellen-Marie Whelan, PhD, RN, FAAN
Dr. Ellen-Marie Whelan currently serves as Senior Advisor for the Innovation Center at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services where she works to identify new models of care delivery and payment methods for Medicare & Medicaid beneficiaries. Prior to joining the Innovation Center, Dr. Whelan was the Associate Director of Health Policy at the Center for American Progress. In addition, she was a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow for the 2003-2004 cycle, where she was a legislative aide to Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. Dr. Whelan also held the position of Staff Director for the Subcommittee on Retirement and Aging to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions working for a distinguished nursing champion, Senator Barbara Mikulski. Dr. Whelan’s academic and clinical background includes health research and serving as faculty at the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University. She practiced as nurse practitioner for over a decade, and established an adolescent primary care clinic in West Philadelphia. Dr. Whelan holds a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University, a master's degree and PhD in nursing and health policy from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in primary care policy at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
